Helena, MO-Vincent T. Evans, Sr., 88, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2010, at his home.
Vincent was born on January 30, 1922, in Gentry County, Missouri, to James and Grace (Pugh) Evans. He was a graduate of Helena High School and then attended Auctioneer School in Mason City, Iowa. He spent his lifetime in the Helena & Rochester area.
Vincent served in the Army during World War II, in the 215th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany.
He then returned to the Helena area where he began his lifelong love of farming and auctioneering for sixty years.
Vincent was a member of Central Christian Church; charter member of Helena Lions Club; and member of various County Boards and Committees.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Ray Evans and sisters, Betty Kuenzi and Mary Lou Lincoln and grandson, Nathan Kapp.
He married JoAnn Taube on May 1, 1948 and they celebrated over sixty years of marriage. JoAnn survives of the home. Vincent is also survived by his son, Vincent “Tom” Evans, Jr. (Dolores) Batavia, OH; daughter, Patricia Kapp (Stan), Cosby, MO; son, Terry Evans (Deborah), Cosby, MO; sister, Dorothy James (Robert), Bryan, TX; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services 10:00 a.m. Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph, MO.
Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. Sunday at the Chapel, where the family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Central Christian Church Mission Fund.
Hoover, Michael C.

Michael Coleman Hoover died unexpectedly February 17, 2010 at North Kansas City Hospital following complications from surgery. He was born September 9, 1942 to Robert and Jeannette (Coleman) Hoover and grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
Michael was graduated from Southern Illinois University with a B.A. degree in Political Science, followed by an M.A. in Sociology. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, earning a Ph.D. in Sociology. He taught at the College of St. Catherine in Minnesota, Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and completed his career with 21 years teaching Sociology and encouraging high academic standards at Missouri Western State University. He retired in 1998. Michael loved learning and earned another M.A. degree in Counseling from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
Michael was a reader and was never bored. He enjoyed bird watching, walks, naps, travel, hiking in the mountains and just sitting and watching tv with his cats and dogs.
Michael leaves his “main squeeze” of 30 years, wife Susan Elizabeth Sollars and their large family of rescued animals. He is survived by daughter, Leah Hoover Eckley “Derek” and grandchildren Nick and Emily Eckley, all of Tucson, AZ and daughter Ani Hoover of Buffalo, NY. Michael was so proud that his girls had become strong, resourceful, creative women.
Michael also is survived by his sister Ellan Hoover Maynard, her husband
Peyton, and their children Joel and Anna of Raleigh, NC; brother Dan Hoover, Wellesley, MA, niece Cary Hoover, Colorado Springs, CO and nephew Bryan Hoover, Minocqua, WI. They will always remember and miss his, “Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!”
Michael also leaves his St. Joseph family, mother-in-law Sue Bayless, Jerry and Charlotte Sollars, Ellen and Bill Schrupp, Greg Baldwin, Frances Lamb and his “brother” and colleague, Dr. Joe Kibirige. There will be less laughter and silliness without him in our world.
No service is planned. The family will have a memorial service in the future.

Verl L. Pendleton, Sr., 88, Union Star, Missouri passed away Tuesday, February
16, 2010 at Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center, Leavenworth, Kansas.
Verl was born June 17, 1921 to Jake and Nellie Pendleton in Savannah, Missouri.
Verl served in the Army, 3rd Division, 7th Infantry Regiment from 1939 to 1945.
He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his heroism during World
War II.
He was a member of American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans.
Verl was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ricky Pendleton; daughter, Karen
Williams; granddaughter, Amy McDaniel; sisters, Mary Lou McIntyre, Pauline Jones;
brothers, Clinton, George and Howard Pendleton.
Verl and Jo Ann were married on September18, 1982, and she survives of the home.
Additional survivors include sons, Verl, Jr. (Diane), Dennis (Linda); daughters, Cheryl (Carl) McDaniel, Barbara (Ron) Steiner, all of Union Star, Susan Bennett, St. Joseph.
He has 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandson.
Celebration of Life 6 pm, Saturday at the home in Union Star. Mr. Pendleton has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Inurnment King Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Catherine Sims Osborne, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2010, at a St. Joseph health care center.
Catherine was born in Huntsville, Alabama, on August 2, 1921, to Eldridge and Ola (Turner) Sims.
She worked as an LPN at Humana Medical Center, in Huntsville, retiring in 1982, after thirty years of service in health care.
Catherine married Charles Thomas Osborne on September 15, 1940, in Huntsville. He passed away in July, 1984. Catherine was also preceded in death by her parents; five sons and two daughters.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Jean Centeno, St. Joseph, MO; two brothers; one sister; eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Osborne has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, MO. There will be no visitation or services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.

Georgia Schmitt, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010, at her home.
Georgia was born on July 10, 1921 in Guilford, Missouri, where she was raised.
She married Charles “Dean” Schmitt on October 12, 1946 at Wyatt Park Christian Church in St. Joseph. He passed away June 25, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Grace (Ellis) Giffin; one brother; and one sister.
Georgia will be sadly missed by her son, Charles V. Schmitt (Dianne), St. Joseph, MO; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, one brother and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph, MO.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Wednesday at the Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00–8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Arlowene “Arlo” Willis, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Arlo was born on December 24, 1925, in St. Joseph, to Frank and Phalissa (Carmichael) Heald.
She was a graduate of Benton High School and worked for Swift and Co. for twenty years.
She married Walter “Les” Willis, Jr. in August, 1943. He passed away on February 28, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harry and Hallard Heald and her son, Roger Willis.
Arlo is survived by two sons, Dennis Willis (Margie), St. Joseph, MO, Walter L. Willis III (Kim), Minneapolis, MN; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph, MO.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Tuesday at the Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Jean Knox, 74, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Saturday, February 6, 2010 at a local hospital.
Jean was born December 28, 1935 in Memphis, Tennessee to Ellard Otis and Eula Myrtle (Jones) Kelley. She was a certified substance abuse counselor for various institutions within the State of Missouri Corrections system. Jean was a professional musician in her early years and was very proud of her 26 years of sobriety. She was a
member of Wallace Christian Church.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include son, Jim Kelly and his wife, Vicki, Kansas City, Kansas; daughters, Susan Rogers and her husband, Mark, Rosendale, Missouri, Debbie Crum and her husband John, Russellville, Missouri, Connie Knox, St. Joseph; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and step-mother, Dorothy Kelly, Kansas City, Kansas.
Private memorial services will be held under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Pastor Darrell Jones officiating. Mrs. Knox has been cremated.

Shirley (Callison) Dunning, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Shirley was born on December 21, 1929, in St. Joseph, to Linville and Caroline (Dennie) Callison. She was a 1948 graduate of Benton High School, a member of First Christian Church of St. Joseph, and a member of DAR.
Previous to becoming a full-time mother, Shirley worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone; Light & Power; and Schreiber Mills in St. Joseph.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Callison.
She married Willard Dunning on January 6, 2009. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include her children, Bill Besinger (Karen), Marysville, KS, Laura DuBose (Nick), Dilley, TX, Larry Smith, Denver, CO; sister, Marion Kearnes, St. Joseph, MO; five grandchildren; Five great-grandchildren and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Services 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, in St. Joseph. Interment Ashland Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening.

Grote, Sr., Lloyd D.

Lloyd D. Grote, of Sammamish, Washington passed away at Providence Marianwood nursing home, Sammamish on Sunday, January 31, 2010. He was 88 years old.
Lloyd was born on July 2, 1921 in Berwick, Kansas, the son of August and Frieda Grote. He was raised in Sabetha, Kansas and graduated from Highland Community College, Highland, Kansas in 1942 and served as fireman second class beginning December 14, 1944 and finally as third assistant engineer in the United States Merchant Marines until his discharge on April 24, 1945. Lloyd moved to Manhattan, Kansas and enrolled at Kansas State University, receiving his Professional Mechanical and Electrical Engineering License in June of 1950. He then accepted a job with St. Joseph Light & Power Company, St. Joseph, Missouri where he met and married his wife Frances Willman on January 10, 1953.
In 1970 Lloyd accepted the position of Assistant Director of Public Utilities for Hamilton, Ohio and moved his family there in January of that year. He retired from this position in March of 1992. He moved to Sammamish in August of 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Rolland and Harold of Sabetha, Kansas. He was also preceded in death by his son, L. Dale, Jr., in 1990; and his wife, Frances, in 1998.
Survivors include daughter, Jane, of Sammamish, Washington; daughter, Sarah, of Washington D.C; and son, John, of Morrow, Ohio. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held 9am, Friday, February 5, 2010 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sammamish, Washington.
A committal service will take place at Horigan Chapel at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 10:30am. Father Joseph Powers officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the committal.

Donald Clinton, 92, Joelton, Tennessee, formerly of Agency, Missouri, passed away
January 27, 2010.
Donald was born July 30, 1917 in Agency to Robert and Victoria (Boone) Clinton.
He married Laura Threalkeld, who preceded him in death. He was a Wonder
Bakery Salesman for 25 years.
Survivors: son, Marty Clinton, Joelton, Tennessee; five grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Mr. Clinton has been cremated. Graveside Services 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Agency Cemetery, Agency, MO, under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smtih & Sidenfaden
Chapel. Rev. James E. Barnett officiating.
There will be no visitation for Mr. Clinton at the Chapel, but a registry book will be available for signing.
Mayhew, Sr., Norman “N.A.”

Norman (N.A.) Mayhew, Sr., 73, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at his home.
Norman was born April 24, 1936 to Norman Hite and Ethel Irene (Merritt) Mayhew in Savannah, Missouri. He attended Lafayette High School. Norman married Patricia Butterfield on December 12, 1953 in St. Joseph, Missouri and she survives of the home.
He was an installer for Branson Heating and Cooling for 23 years and later retired from Silgan Container, in 2002, after 22 years as a press operator. He belonged to Sheet Metal Workers Union # 2 and was a former member of Eagles Lodge.
Norman loved any kind of fishing and watching the eagles up at Squaw Creek game refuge.
Preceding Norman in death were his parents; and one brother, Johnny Mayhew.
Additional survivors include son, Larry Mayhew and his companion, Jackie Phinney; daughter, Ronda Stanart and her companion, Mike Russell; son, Norm Mayhew and his wife, Staci, all of St. Joseph; son, Mike Mayhew and his wife, Gayle of Dekalb, Missouri; brother, Robert Mayhew of Cheyenne, Wyoming; sisters, Karen Johnson of Bastrop, Louisiana, Rosalia Welter and Maria George, both of St. Joseph; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dave McClain of White Cloud, Kansas; sister-in-law, Wanda Boller of St. Joseph; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Union Star, MO –Terry D. Hillyard, 55, passed away Monday, February 1, 2010, from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Andrew County.
Terry was born on February 22, 1954, in Marshall, Missouri, to Ernest and Iva “Nadine” (Harrah) Hillyard. He was a graduate of Central High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Operating Engineers Local #101.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Brian Hillyard and great-niece, Jaeden Badalamente.
Terry will be sadly missed by his children, Joy Gerber, Jennifer Hillyard (Levi), John Hillyard; grandchildren, Katelinn and Michael Gerber and Brendin Pendelton; former wife, Pamela Hillyard; brothers, Ronnie (Eileen) Hillyard, William (Teresa) Hillyard, James (Lisa) Hillyard, sister, Candice (Marty) McGuire,brother, Greg (Shannon) Hillyard; sixteen nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.
Memorial Service 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Union Star United Methodist Church, Union Star, MO. Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Savannah, MO-Charles (Chas) M. Church, 79, passed away Friday, January 29, 2010, at his home.
Charles was born on September 1, 1930, in St. Joseph, to John and Elise (Hagan) Church. He attended Central High School. Charles worked for Armour & Co. for several years, and then Monfort Pork Co., retiring as a USDA Inspector in 1993, after 43 years of service. He was a member of Duncan Hill Golf Club in Savannah, MO.
Charles married Shirley Jean View in St. Joseph. She passed away on July 26, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Katie McClure and Esther Barnett and brother, John Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jon H. Church, St. Joseph, MO and Michael C. Church and wife Cindy, Wathena, KS; granddaughter, Ann Goodwin, St. Joseph, MO; four great-grandchildren, Kyla Snodgrass, Angel Snodgrass, Sage Buckler and Mason Goodwin; his companion of twelve years, Rhonda Sturm; and Rhonda’s three daughters, Becky Fisher, Jill Utech, Kathy, Burt and son Mike Russell; Joe Fisher and Lee Neber who all loved “Poppie” dearly.
Memorial Service 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Mr. Church has been cremated.Inurnment at a later date.
