Taylor, Elva Marie

Elva Marie (Feiden) Taylor, 97, passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at a St. Joseph health care center. Mrs. Taylor was born April 7, 1913, in St. Joseph, where she was a lifelong resident.

Through the years she worked for Westab (Mead), The Lee/Sun coat factory and St. Joseph Board of Education. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Elva was preceded in death by her husband, Don Taylor; her son, George Scott, Jr.; her parents, Peter and Sally (Reynardson) Feiden; brothers, George, John, Richard, Peter, Albert, Donald Feiden; sisters, Regina Kemper, Agnes Luce, Katherine Kostel, Rita Dwyer, Ruth Christy and Loretta Herndon.

Elva is survived by two grandchildren, Barbara and Michael Scott; along with several nieces and nephews, and a good friend, her caregiver, Birdie Stanton.

Private Services are being held with entombment in Mount Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum, under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Father Jorge Ramirez officiating.

Detgen, Randy

Randy Detgen, 57, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Monday, September 6, 2010, at a St. Joseph health care center.

Randy was born on February 20, 1953, in Burbank, California, to Gene and Draga (Svast) Detgen.

He is survived by his son, Will Prince, St. Joseph, MO; brother, Rudy Detgen, Moorpark, California; and half-brother, Corbin Detgen, Buchanan, MI.

Mr. Detgen has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. A Mass will be said in his memory at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Cathedral.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel to help defray the expense of the services and Hands of Hope Hospice.

Shawgo, Keith

September 29, 2010

Keith D. Shawgo, Jr. 70. of Meridan, Connecticut formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on Friday, August 27, 2010 at a Hartford, Connecticut hospital.

Keith was born April 12, 1940 in Havana, Illinois to Keith D. Shawgo and Maxine Walden. He was a graduate of Benton High School in 1958. He earned a bachelor’s degree in church music at Drake University in 1964 and a master’s degree in sacred music from Union Theological Seminary, School of Music/Julliard School of Music in 1966, and studied for a doctor of musical arts degree from Hartt School of Music in 1989.

Mr. Shawgo was a long-time music teacher and choral director at Darien High School. He was the minister of music for the Kensington Congregational Church for the past three years. In addition to DHS, where he worked for 32 years, Mr. Shawgo
previously served as minister of music at the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Redding for 15 years. He also organized and directed a Messiah sing-in for 25 years. Prior to moving to Connecticut, Mr. Shawgo was an organist at several churches in New York City.

Mr. Shawgo is survived by a sister, Sharon Caton and husband, Charles “Buck” of Belle Vista, Arkansas; aunt, Rose Marie Shepherd, St. Joseph; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Carol Pitts.

Newton, Jennifer L.

Jennifer “Jenni” Lee (Strand) Newton, 49, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at a local hospital.

Jennifer was born December 12, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Sheldon Lee and Louise Lorraine (Thompson) Strand.

Jenni’s caring nature was demonstrated by her decision to be an organ donor.

Jennifer was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Guy Strand

Survivors include her four children, Whitney, Ryan, Taylor, Sarah; sister, Mitzi (Wayne) Krause; two grandchildren, Brooklyn Newton-Westcott and Oliver Ames.

Visitation will begin after 11 am, Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Saturday evening. Ms. Newton will be cremated following the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to American Diabetes Association or to her grandchildren’s education fund.

Van Cleave, Earl L.

Earl L. Van Cleave, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri; passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at LaVerna Village Nursing Home.

Earl was born August 26, 1920 in St. Joseph to Robert and Mary (Groux) Van Cleave. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School and served his country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II.

He was employed at Mead products for 38 years, retiring March 1, 1984. Earl enjoyed reading and spending time with his family.

Earl married Helen Anna Kneib April 11, 1944, she preceded him in death January 1, 1997. He was also preceded by his parents; and seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include, daughters, Mary Jo Camp, St. Charles, Missouri, Barbara McKinnon, King City, Missouri, Rosann Van Cleave, St. Charles; sons, Robert Van Cleave, Neosho, Missouri, Richard Van Cleave, St. Joseph; 9 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 am, Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday evening. Rosary at 6 pm. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Northwest Missouri Special Olympics.

McDowell-Fitzpatrick, Lorene

Lorene McDowell-Fitzpatrick, 79, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2010 at her residence.

Lorene was born July 10, 1931 in St. Joseph to Raymond and Ruth (Lewis) Powell. She graduated from Benton High School and Gard’s
School of Business.

Lorene worked 31 years at Buchanan County Court House, spending most of those years in Probate Court. She later worked at Dillards, where she enjoyed working in the children’s department.

Lorene attended Wesley United Methodist Church and spent many years as a Sunday School teacher at King Hill United Methodist Church. As a young mother and wife, she delighted in her home, her cooking, and her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Donald Powell.

Survivors include, daughters, Venny (Alan) Pruitt, Terri (Tim) Dixon, both of Kansas City, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Joshua Pruitt, Teddi Krueger, Alexandria Pruitt, Nathaniel Anderson, Caleb Dixon, Bricker Dixon, Amy Fulton, Andrea Ryan; six great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph Powell, St. Joseph; numerous nieces and nephews; and former spouse of 31 years, Venis McDowell, St. Joseph.

Services 11 am, Monday at Hyde Valley United Methodist Church. Rev. Alan Pruitt officiating.

Visitation will begin after 9 am Sunday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Sunday evening. Mrs. McDowell-Fitzpatrick will be cremated following the service. Inurnment at a later date.

Sims, Lorna

Lorna A. Sims, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2010, at a local assisted living facility.

Lorna was born June 12, 1922 in St. Joseph and lived there all her life. She was a graduate of Central High School and attended Platt Business College. She had worked for American Family Insurance Company, St. Joseph News Press in display advertising, and for the City of St. Joseph in the Finance Department.

Mrs. Sims was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher, active in Women’s Missionary Work, and a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (currently the Radiant Chapter) since 1940.

On March 21, 1942 she married Harold Lee Sims in the Baptist parsonage in Plattsburg, Missouri. He preceded her in death in 1999.

Mrs. Sims was also preceded in death by her parents, Fred E. and Lydia May (Loyd) White and her five sisters: an unnamed baby, Arlis Portia White, Lucille Lavon White, Thelma May White all of the home, and Dorothy Nadine Draper of Marysville, Washington.

Survivors within her immediate family include a son, Donald E. Sims and his wife, DeeDee of Minnetonka, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Kathryn H. Sims of Vergennes, Vermont and Jeremy M. Sims and his wife, Janina of Escondido, California. She is also survived by her niece Mary Lou Lauterbach of Snohomish, Washington, with whom she was especially close after the passing of Mrs. Draper; niece Dorothy May Bauman of Marysville, Washington; and nephews Harry Draper of Everett, Washington and Harold Draper of Seattle, Washington.

Services 10 am, Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Johnny Williams officiating. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 9 am, Monday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends6 to 8 pm Monday evening.

Anderson, Ruth

Ruth “Ruthie” Anderson, 91, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, September 24, 2010, at a St. Joseph health care center.

Ruth was born in St. Joseph, on June 8, 1919, to Harry and Myrtle (Davis) Ross. She worked as a dishwasher at the Buchanan County Courthouse Restaurant. She was known for her strong faith and was an inspiration to all.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Charles Anderson in 1962. She leaves behind many friends, including Jo Ann Whittington, of St. Joseph.

Graveside Services1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph, MO. Friends may call after 12:00 noon Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where family will receive friends 7:00-8:00 p.m. Monday.

Reno, Donald

CMSgt. Donald D. Reno USAF. RET., 89, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, September 27, 2010 at an Independence, Missouri hospital.

Don was born October 23, 1920 in Halls, Missouri to Fred and Maude (Gillespie) Reno. He graduated from Benton High School.

Don served his country faithfully in the U. S. Army, U. S. Navy and the U. S. Air Force, retiring from the Missouri Air National Guard in 1980.

Don was married to Velma Maye Singleton, she preceded him in death in 2001. He was also preceded by his parents; one brother, Ivel and one sister, Beulah.

Survivors include sister, Opal M. Gordon, Topeka, Kansas; daughter, Virginia Fleckal and husband, Ron, Blue Springs, Missouri; son, Harold “Butch” Reno, Bellevue, Nebraska; granddaughters, Courtney (Jason) Lewis, Columbia, Missouri, Ashley Fleckal, Kansas City, Missouri; grandson, Jonathan (Anita) Fleckal, Kansas City, Missouri; five great-grandchidren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Viola Lee Burton.

Private family graveside services will be held at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 1pm, Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 8 pm.

Clisbee, Charles “Harry”

Charles “Harry” Clisbee, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, September 23, 2010 at a local health care center.

Harry was born November 19, 1917 in St. Joseph to Albert and Martha (Glenski) Clisbee. He was a Christian Brothers graduate in 1938 and served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. He worked as a foreman for Ross-Frazier Supply Company.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Albert Clisbee; and sisters, Melva Muleski, Dorothy Chambers and Geraldine Clisbee.

Harry is survived by his wife of 64 years, C. Berenice (Beaufort) Clisbee who he married May 29, 1946.

Additional survivors include, sons, Charles (Nancy), and William (Karen) Clisbee, both of St. Joseph, John (Betsy) Clisbee, Kansas City, Missouri, daughter, Ann LaFollette (Rodney), Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren, Paula Wood, Sarah Phillips, Emily Day, John, David, Luke and Andy Clisbee, Theresa, Bridget and Mark LaFollette; and ten great-grandchildren.

Adams (Pugh), Catherine Mary

Catherine Mary Adams (Pugh), 60, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010, at her home.

Catherine was born in St. Joseph on May 14, 1950, to Lorenzo and Elenor Adams.
She earned her associates degree and was the first female Paramedic in St. Joseph. She was a member of PTA at Mark Twain and Edison Schools, National Arbor Society and Paramedics Association.

Catherine studied ballet as a child and continued her love of dance and music throughout her life. She was a lively spirit filled with compassion, sensitivity and deep love for her family and pets. She will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Justin Pugh.

Survivors include her son, Abraham Pugh, Denver, CO; sisters, Millie Maloney and Cheryl Adams of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Charles Adams, St. Joseph, MO; former husband, Larry Pugh; granddaughter, Courtney Boner; grandsons, Cody, Levi, Aaron and Noah Pugh.
Prayer Service 7:00 p.m. Friday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Inurnment at a later date.

Budnek, Rose Mary

Rose Mary Budnek, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at her home.

Rose Mary was born in St. Joseph on May 5, 1930, to James M. and Rose Anna (Hager) Budnek. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella. She was owner/operator of Rose Bud Bakery in St. Joseph.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sharon Nossel; brother, James “Jug” Budnek; and two great-grandsons, Connor and Hayden Wion.

Survivors include her daughter Melanie (Larry) Wion, St. Joseph, MO; three grandchildren, Jim (Rebecca) Wion, Lisa (David) Duckett and Theresa (Darryl) Hobdy; sister-in-law, Cheryl Budnek; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Rosary 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel with visitation following until 8:00 p.m.

Hayes, C. Norman

C. Norman Hayes found eternal rest and relief from pain on September 19th, 2010. He was born to Norman Lance and Emma Marie (Shields) Hayes in Sparks, Kansas, on March 5th, 1922, but lived most of his life in St. Joseph. In 1943, he married Dorothy Margaret Round, the light of his life. Norman served in World War II in the Merchant Marine and Navy SeaBees, and worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1982.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carol Estes; four sisters, Pauline Hayes, Willamae Richardson, Joan McIntyre, and Bettie Rae Sanford. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Margaret Easter and Lee Ann (David) Blue of St. Joseph, Linda (Doug) Westcott of Talking Rock, Georgia; and two sons, Bruce Hayes of Kansas City, and Robyn Hayes of Decatur, Georgia; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Norman has been cremated. Services 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Hillegass, Robert C.

Robert C. Hillegass, 61, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, August 13, 2010, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his son, Rick Hillegass; daughter, Polly Hillegass, and eight grandchildren, all of St. Joseph, MO.

Mr. Hillegass has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation. Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Horning, Mary Madeleine

Mary Madeleine Horning, passed away Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Saxton Riverside Care Center. Madeleine was born to Vincent and Margaret (Beauford) Hansen in St. Joseph on March 4, 1919. Preceding her in death are her parents, husband James Horning, Sr. and two brothers, Vincent and Francis Hansen.

Madeleine lived most of her life as a wife and homemaker in the St. Joseph area and was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the country in their motor home, as well as wintering in Florida with her sister and brothers.

In her late years, Madeleine lived in northern Arkansas and southwest Missouri until, due to failing health, she moved back to St. Joseph to Saxton Riverside Care Center in February, 2008.

Survivors include one sister, Margaret Brzycki, Estero, Florida; daughter Sharon Lory (Cecil), Faucett, MO; son, James Horning, Jr. (Doris), Strafford, MO; two grandsons; one granddaughter; one step-granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors at Horigan Chapel at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a Funeral Mass under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a charity of the donor’s choice or an offering for Mass in her honor.
