Baird, Sara

Sara J. Baird 95, St. Joseph, passed away on March 27, at Carriage Square Health Care Center. Sara was born in Slater, MO on July 13, 1915 to Glenn and Ella Alexander. She married John C. Duggins on October 13, 1936 in Columbia, MO; they remained married until his death in June of 1980. She remarried in November 1981 to James Baird; he preceded her in death in 1998. Her two sisters Kathryn Sappington and Ruby Dulaney also preceded her in death.

Sara was a spirited and feisty woman who until recently still lived in her own home. She was a voracious reader who liked to keep abreast of current events, and would not hesitate to share her opinions. She enjoyed bridge, gardening, and was an avid mahjong player. She was a member of The Flower Society and a former member of PEO, Chapter JF. She was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church.

Sara will be greatly missed by her children, John Duggins and wife Janet of Red Oak, TX, Darrell Shipley and husband Ed of Scottsdale, AZ, and Tom Duggins and wife Nancy of St. Joseph. Sara leaves 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, who were all a great source of pride to her. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Sara will be cremated under the direction of Heaton- Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, April 30, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church. The family suggests memorial gifts to either First Presbyterian Church at 301 N. 7th Street, or Second Harvest of Greater St. Joseph, 915 Douglas.

Robert, Vada “Fran”

Vada “Fran” Roberts, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, March 28, 2011 at a local health care center.

Fran was born April 7, 1922 in St. Joseph to Raymond and Marie (Allison) Hoskins. She was employed as an inspector for King Radio in Lenexa, Kansas.

Fran was married to Truston Roberts on November 16, 1945 in Kansas City, Missouri, he preceded her in death December 15, 1996.

Fran was also preceded by her parents; sister, Edna Mae Loy; and brothers, Everett, William and Raymond Hoskins.

Survivors include brother-in-law, George Loy; sisters-in-law, Julia Lee Hoskins, Eva Dugan, all of St. Joseph; several nieces and nephews.

Services 11 am, Friday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

Turgeon, Rose Marie

Chamberlain, SD- Rose Marie Turgeon, baptized Maria Angelina Rosabel Vigil.

God called Rose to the gates of heaven March 27, 2011 surrounded by her loving family at her daughter’s home in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was born January 22, 1937, to Juan B. and Victoriana (Gallegos) Vigil in Conejos, Colorado.

After graduating high school from Mt. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas, she worked at St. Joseph School in Chamberlain, SD. Here, she met the love of her life, O.A. Turgeon. They married May 19, 1956 in Chamberlain, SD. They have six loving children.

Rose was a member of the St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain. She was preceded in death by her parents and baby Turgeon.

She is survived by her husband Junior Turgeon of 55 years, Chamberlain, SD; sons Dr. Abe (Ericka) Turgeon, Amarillo, TX; Daniel (Di) Turgeon, Wasta, SD; Steve Turgeon, Chamberlain, SD; and Randy Turgeon, Cranston, RI; daughters: Victoria (Mike) Gertsema, St. Joseph, MO; Lesa (Dan) Speck, Cabot, AR; grandchildren: Travis, Aaron, Caitlin, Cody and Chelsea Turgeon; Sr. Angela, Nicholas and Anthony Gertsema; Erica, Emilie Speck; Ashley (Jessie) Wilson, and great-granddaughter, Paeysn Wilson; sisters, Arlene Seevers and Victoria Martinez; brothers: John, Senny, Ralph and Tom Vigil.

A rosary will be held at 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2011, at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain, SD.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sat. April 2, 2011, at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain, SD.

Thompson, A. Dean

A. Dean Thompson, 84, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011, at his daughter’s home in Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Dean was born on May 30, 1926 in Gallatin, Missouri to Elihu and Frankie (Vaughn) Thompson. Dean served in the United States Navy, he was a dairy farmer, Auctioneer Colonel, car salesman and had also worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation.

He was also a Professor of Auctioneering at the Mason City School of Auctioneering, Mason City, IA.

He was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church and volunteered at their food kitchen, several American Legions, Nevada Iowa Lions Club, and a member of the Westchester Village People.

He married Helen R. Cunningham on May 23, 1948 in Gallatin, Missouri. She preceded him in death on June 12, 2004. He was also preceded by seven brothers and sisters and son-in-law Eldon Howell.

Survivors include his children, Sharon Howell, Waukee, Iowa, Gary (Audrey) Thompson, Round Rock, Texas, Steve (Debi) Thompson, Spring, Texas and Ruby (Ashley) Bickmore, Ardmore, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (Junior) Thompson and sister, Dorothy (Thompson) Wilson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Monday March 28, 2011 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm.
Final resting services are scheduled for 10 am Tuesday March 29, 2011 at Wyatt Park Christian Church. Interment to follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph, MO.

Bradley, Pauline “Polly”

Pauline “Polly” Bradley, 82, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Carriage Square Health Care Center where she received excellent care from their loving and dedicated staff.

Polly was born on July 10, 1928, to Rev. Loyal and Hazel (Boyd) Brown in Kansas City, Missouri. She had worked for Sears and American National Bank and was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church.

She married Robert (Duane) Bradley on February 10, 1979 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 10, 2004. Her parents and two sisters, Etheline Whittle and Ernestine Gray, also preceded her.

Survivors include two sons, Don Reid and wife Debbie, St. Joseph, Missouri and Bob Reid, Jr., Tampa, Fla; step-daughter, Wendy Bradley, Princeton, Missouri; grandchildren Susan Reid, Lake Villa, Ill., Cheyanne Reid, St. Joseph, Missouri and Jesse Reid, New Bedford, Mass; several nieces and nephews.

Services 10 am, Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 9 am, Sunday at our chapel, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 pm Sunday afternoon. Prayer Service 6 pm Sunday at our Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

Zell Wayman Fulton, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2011.

Zell was born January 8, 1928 in Stanberry, Missouri to Claude Leslie and Norma E.(Pierce) Fulton. He graduated from Savannah High School with the Class of 1945.

On May 21, 1950, he married Mary Katherine Reagan of St. Joseph. He was employed by O’Malley Beverage for 47 years.

Zell was preceded in death by his parents; and one grandson, Todd Leslie Fulton.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary of the home; son, Terry Leslie Fulton and wife, Cheryl, St. Joseph; daughter, Zella Katherine Harness and husband, Brian of Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services 1 pm, Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 11 am Friday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday evening. Interment High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry, Missouri.

Richard F. Shelton, 82, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday,
March 21, 2011 at his home.

Richard was born January 15, 1929 in St. Joseph, where he was raised, to James W. and Anna O. (Miller) Shelton. He was married 26 years to Jeanne Johnson, who survives him of the home.

Richard retired from Amoco oil, after 28 years. He and Jeanne traveled extensively and lived in Harlingen, Texas until recently returning to St. Joseph to be closer to family. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army.

Richard belonged to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He was a devout Catholic and loved his Church. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council
#571 and the 4th Degree St. Joseph General Assembly #569.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine Shelton; step-son, Terry Rhoades; and brother, Jimmy Shelton.

Louise (Quick) Motley-Miller, 92, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at her home.

Louise was born on September 20, 1918 in Forest City, Missouri to Guinn and Maymie (Tucker) Quick Mellon. She had lived in Wichita, Kansas from 1954 until 1990, when she moved back to St. Joseph, Missouri.

She was a graduate of the Forest City High School and member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She married Keith Motley in June of 1937 in St. Joseph. Keith was killed during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. She later married Elmer Miller in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1974. She was also preceded by her parents, one brother, Jim Quick and her step-mother, Mildred Quick whom she loved and had been raised by.

Survivors include her children, Kay Motley Crovatto, New Orleans, Louisiana, Keith Motley, Jr., San Diego, California, Michael Miller, White Water, Kansas, JoLynn Miller Trussell, Spring, Texas; two brothers, Bob Quick, Ronnie Quick, three sisters, Guinnedeane Brown and Rita McWilliams, all of Oregon, Missouri, Shirley Taylor, White Cloud, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Eric and Richard Evans, New Orleans, Louisiana, Mia Miller Harpel, Woodlands, Texas, Tara Motley Ladman and Devin Motley both of San Diego, California, Sally Woolley, Humble, Texas and Clayton Trussell, Spring, Texas; two great-grandchildren Addison Woolley, Humble, Texas, Gregory Barth, Woodlands, Texas and several nieces and nephews

Baumann, Mary Anne

Savannah, MO – Mary Anne Baumann, 87, Savannah, died unexpectedly Sunday March 20, 2011 in a St. Joseph hospital.

Born November 25, 1923 in Andrew County, she lived in the Cosby and Savannah area her entire life. She was a 1941 graduate of Savannah High School and graduated from Platte/Gard Business University in 1943.

She worked at Armour and Company, North American Aviation, Ford Motor Company, Home Bank and the University of Missouri Extension for 47 years as secretary and retired in 2008 as Youth Education Assistant. She was inducted into the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame August 10, 2008.

She was a member of the Savannah Baptist Church, from 1939 – 1945. She joined the First Christian Church, Savannah in 1945 where she served on the diaconate, as board secretary and worship committee chairman. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 287 and Past President.

On February 27, 1943 she married Elton Wayne Baumann, in St. Louis, Missouri. He preceded her in death December 6, 2003. Her parents, Frank and Anne Schmitt also preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Pam Baumann of Maryville, Tennessee; and Gary and Patty Baumann of Savannah, her daughter Debbie and son-in-law Tim Barnett of Belton, Missouri; grandsons and their wives, David Jr. and Donna; Michael and Kara; Andrew and Vicky; Gregory and Megan; Jeffrey and Jonathan Baumann, and Scott Barnett; granddaughters and their husbands Melissa and Ben Phillips, Christina and Eric Wheeler, Emily Baumann; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are to be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at the First Christian Church, Savannah. Interment Savannah Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. The body will be removed from the funeral home to lie in state at the church on Wednesday morning after 9:00 a.m.

Hoecker, Craig A.

Craig A. Hoecker passed away March 10, 2011 at a local health care center.

Craig was born November 9, 1948 in St. Joseph to Elmer and Bonnie (Gerber) Hoecker. Craig was born and raised in St. Joseph graduating from Central High School.

He served in the Army and was a Vietnam War Veteran. He later moved to Colorado where he began his career with the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring after 31 years.

Craig was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving Craig are his mother, Bonnie Hoecker, St. Joseph; brother, Brian (Stephanie) Hoecker, Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Jeannine (Dennis) Shellito, Dodge City, Kan.; nieces, Lacey Loumaster and Amanda Dewey; nephews, Jake and Kyle Shellito; two great-nephews and a great-niece.

Craig was cremated under the directions of the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Zion United Church of Christ, 816 Faraon, St. Joseph. Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m.

Brizendine, Ema J. “Jeanie”

Ema J. “Jeannie” Brizendine, 74, Clarksdale, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at a local health care center.

Jeannie was born February 25, 1937 in Vantage, Washington. She married Everett “Bud” Brizendine, Jr., in 1954. She was preceded in death by Everett L. Brizendine, Jr., her mother, Hazel Dunlap, and a sister, Valeen LaFountain.

Jeannie spent most of her life as a resident of Deer Park, Washington. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary Eternal Order of Eagles Aux. Aerie No. 3564 and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Aux. No. 3067.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Wigger and husband, Neil of Clarksdale, Missouri, Sandy Zug of St. Joseph, Cindy MacLean of Deer Park, Washington, Debbie King
and husband, Jim of Elwood, Kansas; and a son, Everett L. Brizendine III of Clarksdale; nine grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Rhoads, Ora M.

Savannah, MO – Ora M. Rhoads, 89, of Bolckow, MO, passed away Wednesday March 16, 2011 at the King City Manor in King City, MO.

Born July 2, 1921 in Bolckow, Mo she was the daughter of Floyd Wesley and Lillie (Hilton) Sybert. She was married to George Rhoads, Sr. in 1946 and they were later divorced.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Manley, Olen (Jeff) and Oba Sybert and four sisters, Opal Burchett, Oma Miller, Nancy Fitzpatrick and Mary Alsup.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy Flora and husband John of Bolckow, MO; two sons, Jerry Rhoads and wife Barb of Bolckow, MO and George Rhoads, Jr. and wife Joan of Pittsburgh, MO; one sister, Ola June of Savannah, MO; one sister-in-law, Opal Currier of Lexington, MO; 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Rhoads attended public country schools north of Fillmore, MO. From 1969 to 1987 she owned and operated Country Kitchen restaurant in Savannah. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening and canning, reading and baking for her grandchildren and family. She was of the Christian faith.

Funeral services will be held Saturday March 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel in Savannah, MO with her nephew Keith Mowry officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Bolckow, MO. Visitation is one hour prior to the service on Saturday with the family receiving friends at that time. Friends may call Saturday morning after 8:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to SSM Hospice of Maryville or to the donor’s choice.

Stewartsville, MO – Clifton E. Karl, 80, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011, at a Cameron, MO
health care center.

Clifton was born on August 14, 1930, in Clarksdale, MO to George and Theresa (Kneib) Karl. He was raised in Clarksdale, graduating from Clarksdale High School. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. After being discharged, he returned to Clarksdale, and in 1955, he married Jean Newkirk. He worked at Swift & Co. until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Easton, MO and American Legion Post #508, Stewartsville, MO.

Clifton was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers Francis and Melvin Karl.

Survivors include his son, Clifton E. Karl, Jr., Stewartsville, MO; daughters: Karla Zerbe, St. Joseph, MO and Barbara Brockman, Stewartsville, MO; grandchildren, T.J. Peters, Brandon Peters and Angel Hetz; 4 great-grandsons; 1 great-granddaughter; 1 step-great-grandson; brother, Alfred Karl, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Thelma Edith Goerke, 97, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011, at a St. Joseph health care center.

Thelma was born May 12, 1913, in St. Joseph, MO the daughter of Arthur and Emma (Welter) McNair.

In 1930, she married Millard “Ted” Goerke, who preceded her in death in 1983. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harvey, Frank, and Orie McNair; sisters, Essie Childs, Sylvia Balabon, Florence McNair, Flora Logan; son, Millard C. Goerke; grandsons, Mark Goerke, Charles DeHart and infant granddaughter, Carol DeHart.

Mrs. Goerke graduated from Lafayette High School and worked for Quaker Oats thirty-one years, retiring in 1975.

She was a member of Central Christian Church; Lovers Lane Chapter, ABWA; Quaker Oats Social Club; Quaker Oats Quarter Century Club; Amazonia Rebekkah Lodge and Y-Women.

Survivors include her daughter, Alice Jean (Joseph) DeHart, St. Joseph; Anna Brindley and Sally (Richard) Akins, Santa Ana, CA and daughter-in-law, Linda Goerke, St. Joseph, MO; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-great-grandchildren; 1 niece and 3 nephews.

Hoppe, Betty Ann

Elizabeth Ann (Johnson) Hoppe, 91, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Laverna Village Nursing Home.

Betty was born September 9, 1919, in DeKalb, Missouri, to Leo and Elizabeth “Bess” (Hopkins) Johnson. She was raised in St. Joseph, where she attended grade school and high school at The Convent of the Sacred Heart, graduating in 1937. She then obtained an associate degree from St. Joseph Junior College.

In her younger years, Betty worked for Dr. Isaac Droher, a dentist, and was an avid golfer, once making a hole-in-one at Fairview Golf Course.

Betty married Paul Hoppe on June 5, 1943, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, he survives of the home. During the war, they lived in Fresno, California, where their first child was born. After the war, they returned to St. Joseph, where they have lived since.

Betty was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She also belonged to Ladies of Charity, Children of Mary, St. Anne’s Altar Society, and was President of Christian Brothers Patroness Club.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law, Jim F. Evans.

Additional survivors include daughter, Beth Hoppe Evans; son, Gary Hoppe and his wife, Barbara, all of St. Joseph; grandson, Chris Hoppe and his wife, Karrey, of Lawrence, Kansas; and cousin, Tom Donegan, Naples, Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial 1:30 pm, Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Fr. Ron Will, C.PP.S. and Fr. Bill Walter, C.PP.S. Con-celebrants.

Harrison, Dorothy

Dorothy Ella (Wright) Harrison passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at
LaVerna Village, Savannah, Missouri.

She was born November 15, 1926 in St. Joseph to Grace Elizabeth (DoBele)
and Larry Wright. Dorothy married Charlie R. Harrison, Sr. on November
18, 1944, he preceded her in death in 1998.

Dorothy and Charlie started Harrison Plumbing and Heating, along with his
father, in the early 1950’s and continued in business until 1976. In 1977,
she and Charlie joined St. Francis Catholic Church.

Since retirement, she has been active in the St. Anne’s Altar Society as
well as the House of Bread. She also belonged to St. Francis Xavier Widowed
Person’s Group and Daughters of Isabella. Charlie and Dorothy traveled during their retirement right up until Charlie’s death.

Family (especially her grandchildren) and her Church were very important
to her.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; and son, Rev. Charlie R. Harrison, Jr.

Survivors include daughter, Wendy Battreall and husband, Mike, St. Joseph; daughter-in-law, Kay Harrison, Wichita, Kansas; grandchildren, Christopher (Carrie) Harrison,
Gabriel (Sarah) and Grant Battreall, Elizabeth (Shaun) Duncan; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial 1:30 pm, Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic
Church. Visitation will begin after 9 am, Sunday at Heaton-Bowman-
Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from
2 to 4 pm, Sunday. Rosary at 4 pm. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Francis
Xavier House of Bread or Hands of Hope Hospice.

Sollars Sr., Richard

March 12, 2011

Richard Sollars, Sr., 69, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Saturday March 12, 2011 at the LaVerna Village Nursing Home in Savannah, MO.

Born October 17, 1941 in St. Joseph, MO he was the son of Gilbert and Jennie Sollars.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David Sollars.

Surviving are a daughter, Paula Larison; a son, Rick Sollars; one sister, Virginia Sellars; three brothers, Jack Sollars, Jerry Sollars and George Sollars and three grandchildren.

Mr. Sollars had been employed for Rainbow Bread in St. Joseph several years ago. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. He was of the Christian faith.

Mr. Sollars has been cremated. There will be no visitation or services for Mr. Sollars at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. Memorials made be made to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Lee, Mary Louise (Lichty)

Mary Louise passed away March 11, 2011 in St. Joseph, MO. She was born on July 20, 1929 to Norman Francis and Dorothy Cecile (Nichols) Lichty in Des Moines, Iowa, where she lived into her early twenties.

Mary attended Drake University where she completed a two year secretarial certificate and met her husband of 61 years Richard “Dick” Lee. Mary and Dick spent their early married life in towns in north central Iowa, where they had five children: Diane (died in infancy), Deanna, Barbara, Clayton and Richard.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one brother, James Norman Lichty.

She is preceded in death by her parents and step mother Mary Jean Nichols.

In 1968, Mary and Dick moved their family to Albany, MO, where they lived until moving to St. Joseph in 1983. They began spending their winters in Arizona, where they lived for 18 years. They returned to St. Joseph and were living at the Living Community of St. Joseph, where Mary spent her last days calmly at home.

Mrs. Lee has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. A memorial service will be held at Clair United Methodist on March 19, 2011 at 11:30 AM with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. The family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Joseph or Albany Humane Society.

Stephens III, “Sarge” Glenn William

“Sarge” Glenn William Stephens, III, 51, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at his home.

Sarge was born January 16, 1960 in Omaha, Nebraska to Glenn William and Ann Louise (Pile) Stephens, Jr. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from
Central High School in 1978. He attended Southwest Missouri State University, as well as Missouri Western State University.

At an early age, Sarge started at Stephens Tire Mart, then relocated to California, where he worked in the oil fields. He was later joined by Diane Lindgren, who was to become his lifelong companion. While in California, they owned and operated two businesses; Sarge’s Scoops by the Sea Ice Cream and later Sarge’s Motor Pool.

In the early 90’s, they moved back to St. Joseph to raise their children, Ray and Kelly.

Sarge was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Williams Stephens, Jr.; grandparents, Glenn Stephens, Sr., Mary Kay Stephens, Glenn Pile, Mary Louise Pile; and cousin, David Stephens.

Survivors include lifetime partner, Diane Lindgren; son, Ray Lindgren Stephens; daughter, Kelly Lindgren Stephens; mother, Ann Stephens; sisters, Kathie Stephens, Cindy Santens; nieces and nephews, Josh and Emilie Fasching, Matt and Mark Santens; Aunt, Cookie Ready; her son, Brad Ready; and cousin, Julie Stephens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm, Friday March 18, 2011 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Mr. Stephens has been cremated. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorial contributions to United Cerebral Palsy.

Reardon, Virginia

Virginia Reardon, 85, Easton, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at a local health care center.

Virginia was born July 6, 1925 in Amazonia, Missouri to Elmer and Erna (Strasser) Kurz. She graduated from Savannah High School

Virginia married Charles “Charlie” D. Reardon July 30, 1949 at Cathedral of St. Joseph, he preceded her in death on July 27, 1999. She was a clerical worker for Wyeth Hardware from 1943 -1947, Light and Power from 1947 to 1949 and Montgomery Wards from 1965-1988.

Virginia was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Alter Society. She also belonged to Platte Valley Community Club and Y-Women.

Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Vernon Kurz; sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Gach, Genevieve Gregory; brothers-in-law, Joe Reardon, Howard Allgaier, Thomas Gach and John Gregory.

Survivors include daughters, Debbie Reardon and husband, Darrel Bixby, Grain Valley, Missouri, Karen Reardon, Lees Summit, Missouri; brothers, Irvin Kurz and Betty Cornelius, St. Joseph, Louis Kurz and wife, Naomi, Leawood, Kansas; brother-in-law, Wayne Reardon and wife, Mary; sister-in-law, Ruth Kneib and husband, Earl, all of Easton, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Florita Allgaier, St. Joseph, Peggy Reardon, Clarksdale, Missouri; many nieces and nephews.

Charlotte Leontos, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday,
March 9, 2011 at a local health care center.

Charlotte was born April 29, 1922 in St. Joseph to Eugene and Josephine
(Zawaczki) Zatorski. She graduated from Central High School.

Charlotte was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
She enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid reader.

Charlotte married Christos Leontos on January 30, 1946 at St. Peter and
Paul Catholic Church in St. Joseph, he preceded her in death on July 8, 2007.
She was also preceded by her parents; and two brothers, Eugene and Floyd
Zatorski.

Survivors include children, Katrina Cole, Chris Leontos, Jr, both of
St. Joseph, and Steven Leontos of Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial 10 am, Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe
Catholic Church. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Friday at Heaton-
Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will
receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday evening. Entombment Mt. Olivet
Mausoleum.

Hurst, Juanita Fern

Juanita Fern Hurst, 66, of Savannah, MO passed away Tuesday March 8, 2011 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.

Born August 3, 1944 in Andrew County, MO, she was the daughter of Fred and Opal Helen (Jennings) Grishow. On July 3, 1963 at Fillmore, MO she was married to Wayne Dean Hurst who survives of the home.

Also surviving are a son, Mike Hurst and wife Cathy of Agency, MO; a daughter, Dana Rogers and husband Phil of Savannah, MO; five grandchildren, Megan, Ariel, Camden, Kaitlin and Luke; several nieces, nephews, extended family and her beloved dog, Buckwheat.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Tony Dean Hurst in July 1965; one sister, Leona Lance and one brother, John Grishow.

Mrs. Hurst was a graduate of Fillmore High School. She had been employed by K-Mart, Noma Lights, and Wal-Mart in St. Joseph for a number of years retiring five years ago. Juanita was a member of the Fillmore Methodist Church and she enjoyed crocheting, gardening, flowers, fishing and especially spending time with her grandchildren and attending their baseball games.

Funeral services will be held Friday March 11, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel in Savannah, MO with Bro. Dick Lionberger officiating. Burial will follow at the Fillmore Cemetery in Fillmore, MO. Visitation will be held Thursday evening after 5:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be made to the donor’s choice.

McElduff, Winona

Winona Eugene (Powell) McElduff, 86, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the local hospital.

Winona was born on March 25, 1924 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Charles and Leona (Vaughn) Powell. She was a graduate of Central High School. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Green Acres.

Winona was a member of the RLDS Church and the Council of St. Francis. During World War II, she volunteered for Inter-Serv and with the American Red Cross. Winona also volunteered for RSVP Program, Allied Arts, Cancer Society, Chamber of Commerce and United Way during her lifetime.

She married James Thomas McElduff he preceded her in death on February 7, 1974. She was also preceded by her parents, son, J. Stephen McElduff, sister, Marjorie (Powell) Lynch, brother, Ronald Powell.

Survivors include her son, Mark McElduff and his wife, Vicky, Kansas City, Missouri; two grandchildren, Erin K. McElduff and Alanna Wright; sister-in-law, Sharon Powell,
and daughter-in-law, Peggy McElduff.

Mrs. McElduff has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Memorial services and entombment will be held at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

Dreikosen, Mike

Mike Dreikosen, 50, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, March 4, 2011 at a local hospital.

Mike was born July 27, 1960 in Valentine, Nebraska to Wayne Anthony and Bette Lou (Foreman) Dreikosen, they preceded him in death.

He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and their Touch Program. Mike also volunteered for the Salvation Army.

Survivors include sister, Lee Ann Ptomey and husband, Phil St. Joseph; three nieces, Micaela (Cody) Brown, Katie and Alicia Ptomey, the lights of his life; and numerous cousins.

Prayer service 3 pm, Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 1 pm, Monday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm Monday evening.

Memorial services 3 pm, Thursday at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine, Nebraska. Interment Mt. Hope Cemetery, Valentine, Nebraska.

Clarence Milo Smith, 61, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011, at his home.

Clarence was born on April 16, 1949, in St. Joseph, to Clarence and Betty Ann (Norris) Smith. They preceded him in death.

Clarence served in the US Army during Vietnam and spent twenty years in the Army National Guard in St. Joseph and was a member of V.F.W. He was employed for thirty years at Boehringer Ingelheim.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Smith of Clarksville, TN; son, Robert Smith, St. Joseph, MO; brother, Dale Smith, Kansas City, MO; sister, Sharon Brown, Kansas City, MO; step-brothers, Gary Smith, Don Smith; step-sisters, Valerie Zink, Jenny McDonald, Terry Mears, Debbie Elder and Josephine Monahan.

Mary J. (Wildberger) Overman, 85, St. Joseph, MO, died March 2, 2011.

Mary was born August 12, 1925, in St. Joseph, MO. She was the daughter of Charles and Esther (Forbes) Wildberger. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ernest Mitchell and Richard Overman; daughters, Mary Callen and Candy Mitchell; Granddaughters, Kristina Blizzard and Candy Mitchell; brothers, John, Bud, Al and Charles and sisters, Lil, Jean and Shirley.

Survivors include children, Ernest Mitchell, Jr. (Brenda), and Kathy Blizzard; step-children, Mike and Pat Overman; grandchildren, Donald Robson (Brenda), Michelle Ranney (Mike), Ernest Mitchell III (Audrey), Billy Blizzard, Robert Mitchell, Brandy Mitchell, John Mitchell (Crystal) and Judy Blizzard; numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

John was born July 26, 1961 in Kansas City, Mo., to Edwin and Vernelle (Stephenson) Bruns, Jr.

John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Edwin Bruns III and James Bruns.

Agnes Hattie (Hager) Drag, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Agnes was born in St. Joseph on September 18, 1918, to George and Veronica (Wegenka) Hager. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 571 Ladies Auxiliary , V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and Daughters of Isabella. She worked over thirty years at Mead Products.

Agnes married Clemens P. Drag, Sr. on June 6, 1940 in St. Joseph. He passed away in 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George, Anthony and August Hager, sisters, Rose Budnek, Veronica Michalczak, Hattie Wells, Josephine Hager and twin sister Anna Frank.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary A. (Daniel) Mullins, Broken Arrow, OK; sons, Clem P. (Mary Ann) Drag, Jr., Weldon Spring, MO, and Michael F. West, Larry Lee

Larry Lee West, 71, passed away on Thursday, March 3 at the family home after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in St. Joseph on June 12, 1939 to Alta and Robert West. Larry graduated from Lafayette High School and Gard Business School. He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps and Air Force.

Larry was an ordained deacon at First Baptist Church, St. Joseph. He served as Sunday School teacher for the Good News Class, chairman of numerous committees, and mission team member. He sang in the church choir and led the church softball team to two Baptist League Championships.

Employment included Missouri Department of Mental Health and Mead Products.

He was a devoted fan of Cardinals baseball, KC Chiefs, and Missouri Tigers. In his younger days, he played semi-pro baseball, received multiple bowling trophies, and was a youth bowling coach. Through the years, his family brought him joy.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lauralee West; daughter Michelle Krambeer (Kevin); grandchildren Austin, Houston, and Tyler Allen and Kaitlynn and Brett Krambeer; brother Bobby West (Joyce); sister-in-law Paula Houston Koch; and other family.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m., March 7, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.
Service: 1 p.m., March 8, at First Baptist Church, St. Joseph. Burial immediately following at Savannah City Cemetery.

Clista Jean (Daniel) Lambright, 76, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Clista was born in St. Joseph on October 3, 1934, to Walter L. and Lois (Smith) Daniel. She was a graduate of Central High School, Class of ’52 and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Clista was employed by Armour & Company for twenty years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Eldon Lee Lambright.

Survivors include her children, Terry (Linda) Lambright, Savannah, MO, Steven (Jenny) Lambright, Madison, MS, Diane (Peter) Warren, St. Joseph, MO, Lynne (Craig) Hoffman, St. Joseph, MO and Eugene Lambright, Kansas City, MO; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sharelle Ritchie, St. Joseph, MO.

Shultz, Jack

Jack Shultz, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Missouri Veteran’s Home in Cameron, Missouri.

Jack was born November 7, 1924 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Paul and Virginia (Gunn) Shultz. He graduated from Savannah High School and served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II and the Korean conflicts.

Jack was a self-employed barber for over 25 years and also worked for St. Joseph Transit. He married Betty Lou Trapp, she preceded him in death August 1, 2003. He was also predeceased by his parents.

Jack was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He also belonged to Barbers Union Local #128, Mr. and Mrs. Club and Transit Union.

Survivors include daughter, Patty Burns and husband, David; grandson, Scott Burns and wife, Linda; great-grandsons, Riley and Andy, all of St. Joseph;
sister, Joan Propes, Rosendale, Missouri; and brother, David Shultz, Gorin, Missouri.

Services 10 am, Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 10 am, Wednesday at our Chapel, where the family
will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday evening. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Gary Lee Coder, 73, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Gary was born on August 16, 1937, in St. Joseph to William and Rose (Coffin) Coder.

Gary started his career as a brick layer with his Dad. He also worked in retail sales and was a member of the Air National Guard. He retired as an assembler for Altec.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy E. Coder and sisters, Aline Reeder and Rosemary and John Klamm

Gary married Margaret “Peggy” Cunningham in 1962 in St. Joseph, MO. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include children, Shawn Coder, Gary Coder, and Shannon (Greg) Hillyard, all of St. Joseph, MO; grandchildren, Kyle, Tyler, Ashton, Chelsea, Christine and Logan; brothers, Bill (Joyce) Coder, Richard (Ruth) Coder and Ronald (Gail) Coder; sister, Sandra Coder; brother-in-law, Harold Reeder; sister-in-law, Renate Coder and cousin, Madeline (Ralph) Church.

Faucett, MO- Elnora Louise Polleck, 82, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Elnora was born on July 21, 1928, in St. Joseph, MO to Michael J. and Violet I. Tracy. She was raised in St. Joseph and attended Central High School. She worked as a seamstress for many years at Sun Garment Co., H.D. Lee Co. and Big Smith.

Elnora was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Irene Tracy, Ruth Benjamin, Bernice Gurwell, and Hattie Campbell and one brother, Mike Tracy

Survivors include her son, Frank Polleck, St. Joseph, MO; Daughters, Janice Matthews and husband Earl, Faucett, MO and Dr. Deborah Polleck and husband Dr.Bryce Goman, St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Misty Matthews, Heather Hughes and Wayne Matthews; three great-grandchildren; sister, Betty and Wilbur Wray and family, Kansas City, MO; and brother-in-law, Elmer Campbell, Clinton, MO.

Turney, MO-Kathryn Elizabeth Kirk, 57, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011, at her home.

Kathryn was born on April 25, 1953, in Warren, Ohio. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Nursing Homes and had also taught nursing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary (Marcell) and William Whitfield Kirk, Jr., and sister, Marian Kirk.

Cremation has been completed under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, MO.

A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. at St. Munchin Catholic Church, Cameron, MO with a Memorial Mass following at 10:00 a.m.

Spaeth, Loretta “Eileen”

Loretta “Eileen” (Reardon) Spaeth, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on February 25, 2011.

Eileen was born on April 3, 1923, in St. Joseph, MO to Joseph and Rose (Wogan) Reardon. She grew up in the Easton, MO area and graduated in 1940 from Easton High School.

On November 21, 1942, she married C J (Bud) Spaeth at St. Joseph Church, Easton, MO where she remained active until she was no longer able. She held an office in the Altar Society for many years, lectured and sang in the church choir. She was incredibly dedicated and wished to attend Mass until the day she passed away. Eileen’s interest in family and their activities and her ability to make each one feel special will long be remembered.

Eileen was preceded in death by her husband March 16, 2010 and their son Jim, siblings, Frances Bennett, Joan Turnbull, and Joseph Reardon. Survivors include daughters Jeanne (Jim) Rost, Carol (Ron) Schober, Mary Wilson and a son, Steve (Amy) Spaeth, sixteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Easton, Missouri. Interment St. Joseph, Cemetery, Easton, Missouri. Visitation will begin after 2:00 Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Rosary 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at our chapel. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hands of Hope Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Huff, Myrtle Marie

Savannah, MO – Myrtle Marie (Anne) Huff, 98, died February 26, 2011.

Born in Amazonia, MO, July 1, 1912, she owned Ann’s Café in St. Joseph, MO, Ann’s grocery store in Corning, MO; Care Aide at St. Joseph State Hospital for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Mental Health Association for over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by parents, William and Ida Logston; husband, Alvin Huff, eight brothers, Claude, Chuck, Ed, Ted, Jess, J.D. (Don), Cliff, Ray Logston; and two sisters, Hazel McDonald and Ruth Hamlin.

Survivors include brother, Dale Logston, St. Joseph, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services: 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Monday at the Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday

Chellow, Harold L. “Smokie”

Harold L. “Smokie” Chellew, 60, St. Joseph, MO, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2011 at his home.

Harold was born on July 17, 1950, in Oak Harbor, Washington, to William and Bonnie (Mathia) Chellew. He was a 1968 graduate of Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, and was an avid supporter of Lafayette High School Wrestling Team. He served in the US Navy during the Viet Nam War and then in the Naval Reserve. .

Harold worked for Missouri-American Water Company for 36 years, retiring as a meter reader in 2010. He was a member of Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO. He was an avid pool player.

Harold is survived by his mother, Bonnie (Elvin) Mathia of Grove, Oklahoma; father,William (Katherine) Chellew, St. Joseph, MO; two daughters, Misty and Carey Chellew, St. Joseph, MO; five grandchildren, Jaden, Julyssa, Jeremy Jr., Darionna, and Miles, Jr.; sisters, Brenda Dean and Barbara Adams, St. Joseph, MO, Trish Wilson, Bellevue, NE and Debbie Mathia, Grove, OK; brother, Mark Mathia, Omaha, NE and several nieces and nephews.

Services 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Honor Flight.

Wegenek, Jerry J.

Ozark, MO-Jerry Joseph Wegenek, 73, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011, at his home.

Jerry was born on July 14, 1937, in St. Joseph, MO to Sylvester and Margie (Brady) Wegenek. For over thirty years of his life, Jerry was a faith-filled servant for the Catholic Church. A man of compassion and love for all of God’s people

Survivors include cousins Carol and Roger Marriott, Susie and J. (Joseph) Waugh, all of St. Joseph, MO and Charlene and Wilbur Wagner of McClouth, KS; and foster son Sam Quarles of Kansas City, KS. He also leaves behind many other cousins and friends.

Memorial Mass 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Xavier House of Bread or St. James Place Social Services in Kansas City, MO.
