Robert “Bob” H. Cotter, 68, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011 surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bob was born August 20, 1942 in Los Angeles, California to Cy and Lucille (Wall) Cotter. He graduated with a Master’s Degree
from Northwest Missouri State University, while there he was President of the TKE fraternity.
Bob served his country in both the Army and Navy Reserves.
He was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church.
Bob owned and operated Cotter Travel, since 1985. He belonged to the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce and the East Side Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
Bob loved music and had a passion for sports, especially basketball. He was a strong supporter of both Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State Universities.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Mary (Stevens) Cotter, St. Joseph; son, Chad Cotter and wife Debbie, St. Joseph; daughter, Erin Bushey and husband David, La Mesa, California; son, Kevin Anderson and wife Chris, Liberty, Missouri; daughter, Kelly Anderson, Kansas City, Missouri; son, Kent Anderson and wife Lorenna, St. Joseph; grandchildren, Keatley and Jenna Cotter, Aubrey, Taylor and Keegan Bushey, Zac Anderson, Taylor and Travis Poretta, Mateo and Lucas Anderson; and great grandson, Nicholas Chadwick.
Services 11 am, Saturday at Wyatt Park Baptist Church. Visitation will begin after 12 noon, Friday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday evening. Mr. Cotter has been cremated. Private family inurnment at a later date.

Clarence F. Spiek, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, April 25, 2011 surrounded by his family.
Clarence was born September 28, 1925 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Ignacious Paul “Joe” and Johanna Spiek. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Clarence was a lifetime farmer, inheriting his farm from his father. He also retired from Quaker Oats after 42 years in 1989. He married Billie Jean Thomson in 1951 and was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandpa, and brother.
Clarence was preceded by his parents; wife, Billie Jean Thomson in 1993; daughter, Barbara Jean Spiek in 1963; brothers, Eddie and Henry Spiek; and sisters, Margaret Carney, Gertie Dale, Frances Downing and Loretta Judy.
Survivors include son, David L. Spiek and wife, Pamela, Faucett, Missouri; two daughters, Susie K. Farmer and husband, Dean, Cindy E. McDermott, both of St. Joseph; six grandchildren, Lindsey Stroud and husband, Brandon, Jason Farmer and wife, P.J., Ryan Farmer, Tyler Farmer, Korey Jo McDermott, Connor McDermott; two great-grandchildren, Jimmy and Jordan Farmer; three sisters, Patricia Whitley, Josephine Studer and Clara Gillespie.
Services 1 pm, Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 1 pm, Wednesday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday evening. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Oregon, MO – Frank M. “Frankie” Gartland, 77, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Oregon Care Center.
Frankie was born in St. Joseph, MO, on June 12, 1933, to Edward and Isabelle (Gleason) Gartland. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tom Gartland in 1994 and sister, Mary Richey in 2006.
Frankie was a worker for Special Industries, and was a member of the Touch Program. He attended St. Joseph Cathedral and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Agnes Brown, St. Joseph, MO and Patricia A. Murray, Seattle, WA; one brother, John “Jack” Gartland, St. Joseph, MO; and several nieces and nephews.
Prayer Service 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Horigan Chapel. Father Bill Walter, C.PP.S. officiating. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wed. at Horigan Chapel with a Rosary at 10:30 a.m.

Paul D. Wray, 81, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at a local health care center.
Paul was born August 7, 1929 in St. Joseph to Carl and Marie (Anderson) Wray.
Paul served his country in the United States Navy and was a firefighter for the City of St. Joseph for 25 years, retiring as assistant fire chief in 1976.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerald and Virgil Wray; and one sister, Ruby Pulido.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Barbara (Franke) Wray; one brother, Wilbur Wray; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 pm, Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 2 pm, Friday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday evening. Interment Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

SAVANNAH, Mo. — Joan H. Barber, 80, of Savannah passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011.
Joan was born on March 19, 1931 in Oregon, Mo., where she was raised. Mrs. Barber graduated from New Point School and Tarkio College. She later lived in Salina, Kan., and moved to Savannah, Mo., following her retirement.
Mrs. Barber had a wonderful career in radio communication, working at KFEQ in St. Joseph and KSAL in Salina, Kan., where she produced and hosted her own culture and lifestyle program. Following her retirement from radio she worked at Dillard’s in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Barber was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend and was an avid world traveler. She was a member of Savannah United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Savannah Women’s Club, Oregon Women’s Club, and Semper Fidelis and volunteered her time at the Andrew County Museum.
Joan married William Frederic Barber, Jr. of Skidmore, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Marjorie (Garrett) Hornecker; and a brother, Jerold Hornecker.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and John Bebita, Valencia, Calif.; a grandson, Nicholas Bebita; a brother, John (Kathleen) Hornecker, Severn, Md.; a sister, Nancy Hornecker, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mrs. Barber has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Savannah United Methodist Church. Inurnment: Burr Oak Cemetery, Skidmore, Mo., at a later date.

Savannah, MO – Suzanne Ashby, 60, of Savannah, MO passed away Monday April 18, 2011 at her home.
Born June 15, 1950 in Maryville, MO she was the daughter of Millard Ross and Mildred (Gallagher) McMinn. On April 13, 1979 at Savannah, MO she was married to Gene Ashby who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three daughters: Lisa Waller (Steve) of St. Joseph, MO, Tanya Cullum (Chris) of Kansas City, MO, and Joy Larison (Mike) of Savannah, MO; four sons, James Green (Stacey) of Warner, OK, Roy Ashby, Jr. (Michelle) of St. Joseph, MO, Tim Ashby (Lila) of Cameron, MO and Matt Ashby (Melinda) of Ft. Riley, KS; 24 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and a dear friend, Vi Mason who was like a sister to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Suzanne graduated from Nodaway-Holt High School and attended St. Joseph Beauty Academy. She had been employed by Johnson Controls for 28 years until her health failed. She enjoyed traveling, crocheting and going to country music concerts. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Funeral services Thursday April 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, Savannah, MO. Interment in the Maitland Cemetery at Maitland, MO. Visitation is after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Kansas City, MO -Glenn Christman, 36, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on April 17, 2011, at his home after a two year fight with cancer.
Glenn was born on May 13, 1974, in St. Joseph, to Frank Leo and Martha M. (Morgan) Christman. Raised in St. Joseph, he was a 1991 graduate of Central High School then attended University of Missouri and Missouri Western State University. He was an artist and a professional musician and was a member of several local bands throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and had many close friends throughout the country.
Glenn is survived by his mother, Martha Christman; father, Frank Christman, both of St. Joseph; fiancée, Jessica Little; step-daughter, Violet of Kansas City, MO; sister, Kelly Wiegant (Danny) Mangan, Bowling Green, Ohio; niece, Katie Mangan and nephew, Zachary Mangan.
Mr. Christman has been cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Pauline Long, 83, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Monday, April 18, 2011, at Living Community of St. Joseph.
Pauline was born in Grant City, MO on January 9, 1928, to Emmett and Bertha Pauline (Cook) Garrett. She was a member of Patee Park Baptist Church, where she was active in helping with the food pantry. Pauline was nominated for the YWCA 2002 Women of Excellence for her community service. She was a member of King Hill Chapter No. 55, O.E.S. Pauline worked at Westab for sixteen years, until her daughter was born. She and her husband owned and operated Long Dry Cleaning for several years.
Pauline married Lavern Long on August 5, 1945. He passed away on October 8, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and son, Dr. Larry Long on March 28, 2000.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathy (Joe) Weekley, Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren, Alexandria Pauline Weekley, Abigail Marie Weekley and Morgan Elizabeth Long; brother, Joseph William Garrett, Anchorage, AK; nephew, James Long and niece, Diana Garrett.
Mrs. Long has been cremated. Memorial Service 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Inurnment Miller Cemetery, Albany, MO.

Stanberry, MO – Twilah (O’Banion) Mohr, 88, passed away April 14, 2011 at her home.
She was preceded in death by parents, Ora and Grace (Boatwright) O’Banion and husband Walter “Arkie” Mohr.
She worked as a pharmacy clerk.
Survivors are her daughter, Linda McQuinn, sister, Pauline Talmadge, and two granddaughters.

Mary Catherine (Raycraft) Barnaby, 97, lifelong resident of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Mary was born in St. Joseph on August 18, 1913, to Benjamin F. and Margaret T. (Brown) Raycraft. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was a graduate of St. Patrick School, Convent of the Sacred Heart and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1934.
Mary worked as a Supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital until 1941, then worked private nursing duty until 1946. She then went to Whitaker Cable as an Industrial Nurse retiring on August 18, 1978.
On October 16, 1964, she married Donald R. Barnaby. He passed away on December 16, 1977. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret R. Raycraft and brother, Thomas B. Raycraft.
Mary is survived by friends, Linda and Bob Stewart of St. Joseph, MO.
In accordance of her wishes, Mary was cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation or services. A registry book will be available for signing at the funeral chapel. Private inurnment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Charlotte was born in St. Joseph on October 18, 1924, to Mack and Gertrude (Chylinski) Hart. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Joseph Ross in 1963; second husband Norman Koch in 1989, sisters, Barbara Stewart and Sharon Midyett, son Stephen C. Ross and great-grandson Dakota Nell.
Survivors include her son, Ken Ross, Des Moines, Iowa, daughter, Christine Galindo, St. Joseph, MO, step-son John Koch, Monroe, Oregon, step-daughter Jill McCrosky, Great Bend, KS, twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, brothers, Gene Hart & David Hart, sister Stella Flugrad and several nieces and nephews.

Carl H. Reents, 81, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Carl was born on March 13, 1930, in St. Joseph to Carl J. and Nedra (Nickles) Reents. He was a member of Central Assembly of God. He loved woodworking, fishing, puzzles and reading. He served in the U.S.Navy He was employed at St. Joseph Structural Steel for over thirty years. Following his retirement, he worked in maintenance at Brittany Village for ten years.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Ann Reents and son, Bill Reents.

Meredith Nadean (Hulet) Maugh McPhee, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Vintage Gardens North.
Deanie was born in St. Joseph on June 15, 1924, to Dale and Dorothea (Peters) Hulet.
She married Edward Vincent McPhee on July 14, 1984, in Easton, Missouri. He passed away on May 15, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Rocky Maugh, and sister, Inez Wilkins.
Deanie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Easton, MO and a former member of Deer Park Grace United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed traveling, crocheting and reading. She loved to laugh, and in later years, she enjoyed living out on the farm.

Bertha Pearl Poe, 91, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Living Community of St. Joseph.
Pearl was born on October 28, 1919, in St. Joseph, MO, to Charles and Bertha (Lynch) Wolfley.
She attended Convent of the Sacred Heart in St. Joseph. She was a homemaker and worked for Noma Lites and Murphy’s Deli.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lemuel and Frank Wolfley; husband, John Poe, Jr. on August 25, 1995, and a great-granddaughter, Jensen Ellis.
Survivors include her son, Steve (Patty) Poe, St. Joseph, MO; daughters: Donna J. (Richard) Ellis and Deanna J. (Gordon) Latta; ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Martin Leroy “Roy” Bowland, 97, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, April 11, 2011, at a St. Joseph health care center.
Leroy was born on January 4, 1914, in Savannah, Missouri, to Woodford and Clara (Martin) Bowland. He served in the Army Air Force, during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Dick Munkres Post #287; Ashland United Methodist Church; King Hill Lodge #376, A.F. & A.M., 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Moila Temple Shrine and King Hill Chapter #55, O.E.S.
Leroy worked for Anchor Serum Co. and then for Missouri State Highway Department for 25 years, retiring as General Aggregate Inspector in 1977.
He married Madlyn L. Rock on December 24, 1935 in Savannah, MO. During his time in the service, they moved to Florida, where he was stationed. Following the War, they moved back to St. Joseph. In 1978, they moved to Peoria, AZ for fifteen years, then re-locating back to St. Joseph in 1992.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons; brother, Norman Bowland; and wife, Madlyn L. (Rock) Bowland on May 28, 2010.
Survivors include one sister, Clara V. Hoffelmeyer and sister-in-law Betty Bowland, both of St. Joseph, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Inurnment 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph.

Caroline Lapell, 93, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away on April 8, 2011 at a health care center in Wathena, Kansas.
Caroline was born on September 14, 1917 in St. Joseph to Carl and Mary (Negozio) Lapell. Caroline was a seamstress for H.D. Lee and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Peter Lapaglia and one sister, Rose Lapell.
Caroline is survived by her sister, Mary Frances Spikes, Vivian, Louisiana; nephews, Bill Spikes, Vivian, Louisiana, Charles Negozio, Halton, Texas, niece, Denise and Wayne McCullar, Lubbock, Texas, great-niece, Michelle Lapaglia, San Diego, California and numerous nieces and nephews.
Caroline has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation or services held. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Stanberry, MO-Sammy Wiley, 78, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2011, in Stanberry.
Born in Island City, Missouri, on the family farm on September 21, 1932, Sammy grew up and attended The Star School in Stanberry.
He was preceded in death by parents, Sam and Esther (Bryant) Wiley; sisters, Leona Kinkade and Lois Heistand and brother, Lewis Wiley.
Sammy lived several years in Des Moines, Iowa, where he met and married Beverly Berry. They traveled and installed Aluminum Siding for several years. They settled back in Stanberry, where they owned and operated the Recreation Center. They were engaged in farming and were owner-operators of Wiley Fencing until retirement.
After retirement, Sammy spent his time golfing, spending time with family and playing pool at the Stanberry Nutrition Site.
Sammy will be sadly missed by his wife, Beverly Wiley of the home; son, Les Wiley, Urbandale, IA; daughter, Sue Ann Smith, Stanberry, MO; sister, LaVonne Gregg, Haywarden, IA; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive condolences at the daughter’s home on Saturday, April 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Graveside Services will be held at High Ridge Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. on April 10, 2011.

Anna M. Gilley, 89, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the home of her daughter surrounded by her loving family.
Anna was born March 2, 1922 to Frederick and Rose (Krenn) Lederer, in Kansas City, MO. In 1927 at age three the family moved to St. Joseph. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School and was a graduate of Lafayette High School, graduating class of 1940. She was a member of National Honor Society there.
Anna was a member of Peace Corps Quilters Guild, Schmitt Organ Club, Daughters of Isabella, St. Ann’s Altar Society, and was a Visitation Minister St. Mary’s Church from 1981 – 1999. She also enjoyed several different hobbies, playing her organ, quilting, gardening, playing cards with her friends, reading, dancing and bowling but loved nothing more than her family and her church.
Anna was employed over the years with Noma Lights, Quaker Oats, Social Security and Phillips Roxane, where she was a lab tech until she retired in 1974 to care for her parents.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; sisters, Rose (Lederer) Dunn, Mary (Lederer) Bessenbacher; and brother, Fred Lederer.
She is survived by three (3) children, Patricia A. and husband W. Jack Brahler of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Raymond A. Gilley Jr. and wife Sandra of Gladstone, Missouri, and Barbara and husband Jesus Olvera of St. Joseph, Missouri; eight (8) grandchildren, Jason M. Brahler, Mark A. Brahler, James R. Gilley, Raymond A. Gilley III, Anne Gilley Taurino, Joanna Gilley Croney, Daniel E. Olvera, Michael A. Olvera; fifteen (15) great-grandchildren, Josie, Juniper, Tessa, Matthew, Zachary, Jacob, Matthew, Ben, Chris, Alessandra, Vincent, Aspin, Brody, Braden and Isabella, a sister-in-law Marie Lederer, nine (9) nieces and one (1) nephew.
The family would like to thank her caregivers and Hands of Hope Hospice for their loving care of Anna.
Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Sunday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening, with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Mary’s Catholic Church; Hands of Hope Hospice; or The Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity.

Dr. James K. Dobbins DVM, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2011.
Dr. Dobbins was born November 20, 1926 in Arkoe, Missouri to Raymond and Edna (Norris) Dobbins. James served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Dr. Dobbins practiced veterinary medicine in the St. Joseph area for over 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Donna Morin, Doris Beaver, Martha Pickett; two brothers, Edward Raymond and Joseph Norris.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, A. Christine (Hart) Dobbins; son, Edward J. Dobbins II, Amity, Missouri; daughter, Anita M. Lopez, St. Joseph; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin after 10 am, Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Saturday evening. Dr. Dobbins has been cremated.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to a hospice of the donor’s choice.

Mary Catherine Olsen, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, went to be with her Lord on Friday, April 1, 2011, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born on November 19, 1924 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Marion and Mabel (McKinney) Smith.
She was a longtime member of Copeland Baptist church. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, crafts and tending to her flower garden, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Robert Olsen; daughters, Judy Janssen and husband Jim, Sunrise Beach, MO, Sharon Robertson and husband Clint, St. Joseph, MO, Connie Whitsitt and husband Tim, St. Joseph, MO; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; sister, Opal George; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services 11 AM Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 9 AM Sunday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Sunday evening. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.
