Dryer, Pauline Rose “Mimi”

August 12, 2011

Pauline Rose “Mimi” Dryer
1923 – 2011

Love, family and faith,–words to describe Pauline Rose “Mimi” Dryer who was called to heaven on August 6, 2011 at the age of 88. Born May 21, 1923 to Frank and Helen Slibowski, she and her nine siblings were raised in a small but loving home in “Goosetown” St. Joseph. Growing up in the midst of the Great Depression her family experienced hardships common to the nation. Pauline’s father and brothers helped provide for the family by working in President Roosevelt’s New Deal. And, when war came, she grieved the loss of her brother, Frank, killed while serving in Europe. Yet, despite hard times, Pauline spoke fondly of her childhood, noting that she never wanted for anything and appreciated the importance of family, sacrifice and faith.

Shortly after the war, a handsome sailor asked for Pauline’s hand in marriage. Their relationship began at a local skating rink when Arthur suppressed his nervousness to tap Pauline on the shoulder and say hello. This small act of courage began a lifelong partnership which spanned more than six and one-half decades and resulted in 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Arthur and Pauline celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary three days before her passing.

Pauline derived happiness through her family, and strength through her Catholic faith. “Mimi” to her grandchildren, was known for her warm hugs and generous nature. Mimi’s house was a place of warmth, friendship and counsel. Supportive without being judgmental, and quick with a laugh, Mimi never let anyone leave her home with an empty belly or empty heart. “Sit down and relax,” she would say, “let’s enjoy a cup of coffee.”

Her faith was unwavering. A regular attendee of mass at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, she never turned away a deserving charity. She believed in the goodness of every person and that we are all children of God, deserving of love. When she became unable to attend regular mass, she continued to say her daily rosary. In fact, the rosary was the instrumental symbol of her faith. She took great pride in her small collection of rosaries originating from all over the world. Her prayers were known to help loved ones through illness, crisis, and other hard times.

Mimi’s most greatest talent was making every person she met feel special. Comfort meals in her kitchen, her generosity, good humor and loving demeanor will live on in our memories.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Frank and Helen Slibowski, siblings Edward, Dorothy Gardner, Frank, William, and Thaddeus.

She is survived by her husband Arthur, for whom her admiration and heartfelt affection never wavered over their 65 years together. Siblings Agnes Mollus, Marianne Fee and James. Sons, Paul (Elvita), David (Joyce), and Mark. Daughter, Mary (Mark) Christopher. Grandchildren Doug, Marc, Nathan, Sara, Paula, Edward, Danielle, Nicole, Laura, Jacob, Madison, and Josh, and nine great-grandchildren.
