Tate, James Boyd
October 26, 2011
JAMES BOYD TATE
1921-2011
James Boyd Tate, former Deputy Chief of the Kansas City International Airport Tower, died Tuesday, October 18 in Phoenix, AZ after a brief illness. He was age 91.
A meteorological and air traffic specialist, Mr. Tate worked for the United States Government for 36 years. He was hired by the US Department of Agriculture’s Weather Bureau in 1939 and four years later at age 23 was promoted to Chief of the Philips, SD Communications Station, making him the youngest Chief of a Federal Weather Bureau station.
From the Weather Bureau he moved to the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), the precursor to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). There he served as a air traffic controller with assignments in Hawaii during World War II, in St. Joseph, MO and Kansas City where he eventually opened the current Kansas City International Airport Tower as Deputy Chief.
Retiring from The FAA, Mr. Tate began a career in real estate in Kansas City and then Phoenix where he lived for 25 years.
In 1940, Mr. Tate met Josephine Spiek at Platte Guard School of Business. They were married on June 28, 1941 at St. Joseph Cathedral in St. Joseph and raised two children, Charles Marti Tate and Deborah Tate Wright.
Know affectionately to family and friends as “Ole Dad,” Mr. Tate was born to school teachers Charles Henry Tate and Gladys Elaine (Perry) Tate on April 26. 1920 in Maysville, MO. His family moved to St. Joseph, MO where he was raised and graduated from Central High School in 1937.
A life long poker and card player, Mr. Tate was a avid reader, keen on current events, a daily cross word puzzle aficionado, a car enthusiast and, at one time, a gentleman farmer raising live stock on his farm in Leavenworth, KS.
He prided himself on his computer knowledge, managing his finances and often communicating with his family through the Internet.
A wry sense of humor was his calling card accompanied by a big smile and a bigger heart. To him family was paramount. Not surprisingly, even in his elder years, Mr. Tate made frequent trips from Phoenix to Kansas City, St. Joseph, Detroit and Northern Michigan for holidays, family parties and special occasions.
Less than a year ago, while surmising his long life and speculating on how he’d be remembered, Mr. Tate told his daughter Debby: ”Be sure to tell them ‘ he loved life.”
It was not surprising to some that a year ago, Mr. Tate suffered a fractured pelvis doing The Line Dance at a party in his Phoenix retirement complex. However, by Christmastime, he’d recovered from the injury, assiduously attending to a regimen of exercise and physical therapy, then assumed his social activities while “loving life” to the very end.
He was also Master of The Royal Secret of the 32 Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and a member of the Moila Shriners of St. Joseph, MO.
Mr. Tate was predeceased by his wife Josephine. He is survived by a brother Charles Weddell Tate of Las Vegas, NV; two children, Charles Marti (Christine)Tate and Deborah Tate (J. Patrick) Wright, four grand children, Lisa Marie (Mike) Dausch, Richard James (Amy) Muzingo, Gregory Andrew Muzingo and Joseph Tate (Kelley) Muzingo; two grandchildren, Charles Dausch and Caroline Dausch.
A Masonic Tribute will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, October 29 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Funeral Home in St. Joseph, MO followed by an 11 am Memorial Service at the Horigan Chapel at Mount Olivet Cemetery where Mr. Tate will be interred next to his wife.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Mr. Tate’s name to Shriners Children’s Hospitals, c/o Moila Shriners, 701 North Noyes Rd., St. Joseph, Mo 64506.
