Schmidt, William Lewis

William Lewis Schmidt, 62, Savannah, Missouri, passed away on his birthday, Friday, January 27, 2012 at his home.

Bill was born January 27, 1950 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Robert and Thelma Schmidt of Amazonia, Missouri. He graduated from Savannah High School, Class of 1968. Bill served his country in the United States Navy as a Seebee.

Bill married Patsy Reavis on October 2, 1971, she survives of the home. He worked at Silgan Containers for 39 years as a mechanic. Bill was a member of the Savannah Baptist Church.

Bill enjoyed tournament fishing and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He served as a coordinator of Savannah’s tee ball league and was an assistant scout master of Boy Scouts Troop 60.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Brian (Kelley) Schmidt of Arnold, Missouri, Matthew (Elizabeth) Schmidt of Florissant, Missouri; three grandsons, Brayden, Carter and Collin; one granddaughter, Claire; brother, Michael (Anna) Schmidt of Amazonia, Missouri; sister, Carol (Kenneth) Pierce of St. Joseph, Missouri; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services 10 am, Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, Savannah, Missouri. Visitation will begin after 11 am, Sunday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm, Sunday afternoon. Interment Savannah Cemetery.

Atkins, Elizabeth Sue

Elizabeth Sue Atkins, 84, Rea, MO; passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at a local health care facility.

Elizabeth was born on October 19, 1927, near Maitland, MO, to Earl and Ethel (Smith) Atkins. She was a graduate of Oregon High School. Elizabeth worked as a cook at the North Andrew School District. She enjoyed sewing and owned her own upholstering business.

Elizabeth helped establish the Rea Rockets, where she taught sewing and cooking classes for the 4H Club. She was a dedicated Christian and taught Bible and Sunday School classes at Rea Union Church. She was a member of Flag Springs Baptist Church.

Elizabeth married Earl Deforrest Atkins on January 23, 1947, in Savannah, MO. He preceded her in death on January 10, 1995. She was also preceded by her parents; 4 brothers, Paul, Richard, Francis Eugene and Donnie Atkins; 4 sisters, Mildred Adams Cromer, Joyce Kunkel, Neva Atkins and Glenda Atkins.

Elizabeth is survived by 3 daughters; Earlene (Don) Deaton, Savannah; Twila (Wayne) Cox, Rea; Wanda (Donny) Propes, Savannah; 2 brothers, Wayne Atkins and Albert (Glenda) Atkins; Oregon; 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Services 2:00 PM Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held after 12:00 PM Friday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, where family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Friday.

The family has requested memorial donations to North Andrew Scholarship Foundation, Diabetes Association, American Heart Association or the Donor’s Choice.

Blythe, Anita Ruth (Masner)

Maysville, MO – Anita Ruth (Masner) Blythe, 67, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at Cameron Regional Medical Center.

Anita was born on February 10, 1944, in Springfield, Missouri, to Zean William and Jewell P. (Vance) Masner. She was a day care worker and was of the Baptist faith.

Anita was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Zean Masner, Jr., Gilbert, Robert and Ronnie Masner and one daughter, Marie Annette Blythe.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon E. (Jerry) Thomas, Maysville, MO and RoseMary Louise Martinez, Nixa, MO; four grandchildren, Heather and Steven Martinez and Shelbie and Michelle Thomas; brothers, William David Masner, Marshfield, MO and Glendon Ray Masner, Springfield, MO; sisters, Minnie Williams, Parkville, MO, Carol L. Sego, St. Joseph, MO, Roberta McElroy, Senise, GA, Janie Sue Brownewell, Kansas City, KS and Marjorie Rozetta Brown, Seymour, MO.

Mrs. Blythe has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation or services at the Chapel.

Alice Lavon (Bell) Sharp, 79, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012, at her home.

Alice was born on October 7, 1932 in King City, Missouri to Leonard William and Bonnie Frances (Hailey) Bell. She was raised in King City and graduated from the King City High School.

Alice lived in Phoenix, Arizona for a short time, Long Beach California for 10 years, and Kansas City for 20 years. She also lived in Union Star and King City, Missouri for a short time.

Alice worked as a lab technician for Cook Paint and Varnish Company in Kansas City, Missouri, for 20 years, and as a lab technician for Wonder/ Hostess.

Alice was a member of St. Rose of Lima in Savannah.

She enjoyed painting, garage sales, gardening, loved her pets and loved bird watching.

Alice is preceded in death by her husbands, Stanley Goldsmith, and Richard Sharp, and two brothers-in-law.

Surviving family includes daughters, Vickie (Jeff) Clingan, of Van Meter, Iowa; Denise Goldsmith, St. Joseph; sisters, Ella Mae Heintz, St. Joseph; Carol Sue Barton, Kansas City, Missouri; Connie Lou Childers, Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren, Chance Stewart, Cody Stewart, Jessica Clingan, Sarah Clingan, and Heidi Clark, and five great-grandchildren.

Kecia A. King, 46, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012, in St. Joseph.

Kecia was born in Richland, Washington on June 9, 1965, to Opris and Sandra (Mudd) King. She moved to St. Joseph when she was three. She was a graduate of Lafayette High School. She worked in the health care profession and received her certification as a CNA.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Survivors include her daughter, Chave May, St. Joseph, MO; father, Opris (Shirley) King, Kildare, TX; mother, Sandra King, St. Joseph, MO; two brothers, Kevin (Julie) King, St. Joseph, MO and Vincent (Elaine) King, Pasco, WA; three nieces, Jazlyn King, Chalise King, Beyora King; and three nephews, Christopher Erickson, Kevin Cade King, Jalen King; God Sister, Larraine Robinson, great-aunt Juanita McDonald, two uncles, Ernest (Julia) Mudd, and James (Mary) Mudd; four aunts, Dorothy Brown, Rosie Harrison, Marilyn King, and Louise (Jerry) Miles, close friend, Bill Jones, Plattsburg, Missouri; and her best friend and grand-dog, Zoey.

Ms. King has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph.

Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 28th at Brookdale Presbyterian Church. Rev. Paul Gaug officiating. Inurnment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Bonnie E. Trotter 93, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Carriage Square Health Care Center.

Bonnie was born on August 14, 1918 in Melbourne, Missouri to Charles and Silvia (Harris) Robertson, She was a member of Brookdale Presbyterian Church and the Order of Eastern Star.

She married Roy A. Trotter on September 6, 1970. He preceded her in death on October 4, 2008. She was also preceded by her sister, Marcella Boylan.

Survivors include two step-daughters, Darla Simpson (David), St. Joseph, Missouri, Donna Robinson (Lloyd), Elwood, Kansas; two step-sons, Loren Trotter (Jodie), Warrensburg, Missouri, Scott Trotter (Angie), St. Joseph, Missouri and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Trotter has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation or services held.

The family suggests memorials to Brookdale Presbyterian Church.

Ellison, “Sonny”

Leland L. “Sonny” Ellison, 77, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012, in St. Joseph, Missouri

Sonny was born on January 23, 1934, in Quitman, Missouri to Henry and Martha (Walden) Ellison.

Sonny graduated from Maitland High School. He attended Northwest Missouri State College and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Sonny then started working at Swift & Company; he began his career at Quaker Oats, retiring as supervisor in 1992.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Gary Ellison.

Surviving family includes wife, Jane Ellison, of the home, sons, Grant (Mary) Ellison, St. Joseph, Clark (Karen) Ellison, Rogers, Arkansas; grandchildren, Carli and Chuck Ellison, and sister, Sue Winch, Achille, Oklahoma.

Private graveside inurnment will be held at a later date

Cobb, Clayton

Clayton Cobb, 92, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at a local health care center in St. Joseph.

Clayton was born on December 15, 1919 in Savannah, Missouri to Ralph D. and Josephine (Stuckey)Cobb.

He was a graduate of Savannah High School and served four years in World War II in the Pacific theater. He married Gene F. Doersam on October 19, 1947.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Savannah, Missouri where he had served as a deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion Post Dick Munkres #287 of Savannah, and was active at Andrew County Senior Citizen Center where he sang with “The Jubileers”. He also served on the Andrew County Draft Board during the Vietnam War.

Clayton farmed in rural Savannah, then went to work for Barr Construction Company and later worked at the Andrew County Lumber.

Preceding him in death, were his parents, and two sisters, Bessie Lightle and Dorothy Cobb.

He is survived by his spouse of 64 years, three children, Richard D. (Kay) of Kankakee, IL; F. Brian (Susan) of West Linn, Oregon; Kathryn Brittingham (Galen) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services 2:00 pm Friday, at First Christian Church of Savannah in Savannah, MO. Interment Fillmore Cemetery, Fillmore, Missouri.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Thursday, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday evening at Savannah Chapel.

Doan, Mary Evelyn (Turpen) Gebauer

Savannah, MO- Mary Evelyn (Turpen) Gebauer Doan was born near Avenue City, Missouri, to Sydney A. and Emily (McCoy) Turpen on March 29, 1916. She went to her heavenly home on January 22, 2012.

She married Oscar H. Gebauer on August 6, 1931. He preceded her in death November 23, 1959. She lived in Andrew County until 1961 when she moved to St. Joseph, Mo.
Evelyn was a member of the Helena Methodist Church, Helena, Missouri, for many years. After moving to St. Joseph, she was of the Pentecostal Faith. She was a faithful member and worker in the church, and taught Sunday school classes for children. She was a homemaker, and also worked for Stuppy Floral Company and Wyeth Hardware Company.

On October 2, 1970, she married Edwin Doan. He died August 3, 1995.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Glen Eugene Gebauer; four brothers, John, James, Sydney “Pat” and Charles Clyde Turpen; and two sisters, Virginia (Uly) Milhollun and Georgia (Lloyd) Bryson.

She is survived by daughters, Helen (Ralph) Price and Carol Doan Chavez, both of St. Joseph; a sister, Estella Kies, Mankato, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Dennis (Joy) Price, Bonner Springs, Kansas, Ronald Price, Prescott, Arizona, Angel (Tom) Smith, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Vanessa (Travis) Durbin, New Brockton, Alabama; and great-grandchildren, Sondra Price, Isaiah Durbin, Samuel Durbin, Abram Durbin, Anna Rose Durbin and Raymond Smith. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews..

Services 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Rochester Cemetery, Rochester, MO.

Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at our Chapel, where the family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Stewart, Eugene K. “Jack”

Eugene K. “Jack” Stewart, 89, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at his home.

Jack was born on February 28, 1922, in Wathena, KS, to Elmer Elworth and Artie Mable (Clendenen) Stewart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Merle; brothers, Rollie, Harold, Douglas and Merle Stewart; and sisters, Wilma, Mable and Virginia.

Jack was a farmer and also worked for Rockwell International. He served in the US Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a member of V.F.W. #5531, in Wathena, KS, and enjoyed going to the horse races.

Jack married Betty Lou Kindred on August 15, 1961, in Troy, Kansas. She survives of the home. Other survivors include daughter, Helen (Tim) Teague, Elwood, KS; son, Larry Stewart, St. Joseph, MO; granddaughter, Jackie (Mike) Centeno; four great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Xavier, Mikey and Addisyn; three brothers, Virgil Stewart, Atchison, KS, Elmer Stewart, Troy, KS and Luther Stewart, St. Joseph, MO; sister, Josephine Davis, Las Vegas, NV; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Stewart has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation or services.

Gregory, Helen V. (Meek)

Helen V. (Meek) Gregory, 88, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Carriage Square health care center.

Helen was born on September 23, 1923, in Oxford, MO, where she was raised. She was a graduate of Worth, Missouri, High School and a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church.

She married Richard B. Gregory on June 17, 1950, in Maryville, MO. She was preceded in death by her husband on February 8, 1987; brother Charles Meek on November 7, 1994; and her parents, Gloe L.and Eva M. (Dannar) Meek.

Helen worked as an accountant for the MO State Department of Mental Health, retiring on February 2, 1987, after 40 years of service. She loved to travel, spend time with her dogs, feed the birds and play cards.

Survivors include one sister, Mary (Earl) Tullis, St. Joseph, MO; numerous nieces, nephews and their children.

Services 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Spaulding, Frankie D. (Anderson)

Frankie D. (Anderson) Spaulding, 97, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2012, at Saxton Riverside Care Center.

Frankie was the oldest of six children born to Ed and Anna (Rodewald) Anderson in Easton, Missouri on August 4, 1914.

Frankie married Paul Spaulding of Oneida, NY on May 22, 1944. He preceded her in death on August 5, 2004.

Frankie graduated from Central High School and the State Teachers’ College in Maryville. She taught for 20 years in the schools of Buchanan County before moving to Chula Vista, California where she taught 20 more years. She retired in 1979.

In 1981 Frankie and Paul moved back to Missouri. She was a member of the Camden Point Baptist Church, the St. Joseph Catholic Church Quilting Club of Easton, and was secretary/writer for the Young-At-Heart magazine.

She is preceded in death by her husband Paul, parents Ed and Anna Anderson, sister Marge Bowman, and brothers Lewis, Lee, and Harold Anderson.

She is survived by sister Ruth Anderson, cousins Edna Apostol and Kenneth (Doris) Rodewald of Savannah, sister-in-law Jean Anderson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services 2:00 pm Tuesday, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.
Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

McCrary, Gentry T.

Gentry T. McCrary, 86, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Gentry was born on May 11, 1925, in Kidder, MO, to Charles “Woodie” and Juanita (Cox) McCrary. Gentry was a WW II Navy veteran. He worked for Swifts for 25 years and then Carnation. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.

Gentry is survived by his wife of 35 years, Florence McCrary, of the home; sons, Kenneth and Michael McCrary; daughter Kelly (Rick) White; step-children, Earl (Meredith), Eddie and Kirte McCrary, Cindy (Rick) Donaldson, Laura Barnett, Karen (Richard) Barnes; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Hall of Jamesport, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. McCrary has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Graveside Services 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012, at McCrary Cemetery; Gallatin, MO.

Cornell, Doneta

Doneta Kay (Clevenger) Cornell, 64, of St. Joseph, passed away Friday, January 13, 2012 at her home.

Doneta was born and raised in Meadville, Missouri to Donald and Leona (Elam) Clevenger on December 2, 1947, where she graduated from Meadville High School. She then moved to St. Joseph and attended Gard Business School.

Doneta retired from the Missouri Highway Department after 30 years.

Doneta married Billie Gene Cornell on June 24, 1966. He preceded her in death on September 30, 2008. She is also preceded in death by her father, and two brothers, Ronald and Paul Clevenger.

Surviving family includes daughters, Rhonda Cornell, and Julie (Gary) Bacon, grandchildren, Lauren, Leslie, and Rylie Bacon, mother, Leona Clevenger, brothers, Terry and Lyndell Clevenger, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her greatest love was watching her grandchildren, and watching them play in sports activities.

Service 10:00 am Tuesday, at McCarthy Baptist Church.
Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Monday evening.

O’Konski, Joseph

Joseph F. O’Konski, 67 of Lake Waukomis went to meet his Lord and Master on January 9, 2012. Joe was born in St Joseph, MO to Clemence and Berniece (Mollus) O’Konski on Nov 17, 1944. He attended St. Peter and Paul Elementary and graduated from Christian Brothers High School. He was an Army veteran serving in Vietnam. Starting as young as 12 years old, Joe worked for Clarence Rezac at his neighborhood hardware store. Later he worked as a plumbing and electrical buyer for Wyeth Hardware in St Joseph, MO prior to his 25 year career with Model Stone, Inc, now known as Complete Home Concepts. On December 26, 1979, Joe married the love of his life, Christine (O’Rourke) Bagby and they have just celebrated 32 years of marriage. Joe was an avid fisherman and he loved and enjoyed his lake home on Lake Waukomis. Joe was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the NRA, as well as being a past Deacon of Northland Christian Church where he served on many committees, one being the building committee to construct a new edition where Joe will lie in state.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, one step-son, Michael S. O’Rourke, a brother-in-law, Mark G. Bagby and father-in-law, Mark L. Bagby and his mother-in-law whom he and Christine cared for, Nellie May Bagby.

His loving family includes, his wife of 32 years, Christine (O’Rourke), 8 Step-Children, Kathleen Olvera and her husband Mark, Kelly Jarrett and her husband Jay, Danny O’Rourke and his wife Molly, Rosie Holder and her husband Myron, Bridget Sandow and her husband George, Ryan O’Rourke and his wife Genni, Maureen Dudley and her husband Heath and Kenny O’Rourke and his wife Lori; Sister, Mary Gall and her husband Fritz, brothers, Richard O’Konski and James O’Konski and his wife Margery; 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; 7 nephews; 3 nieces; and a host of great -nephews and great-nieces. Joe is also survived by a favorite cousin, Joe Kilanoski and his wife Carol, Phil O’Konski and many other cousins.

Services to honor Joe’s life will be a visitation with family 5-8pm Wednesday, Jan 11 at Northland Christian Church; 6120 NE 48th St, KC,MO. Joe will be taken to St. Joseph on Thursday morning and he will lie in state at Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel. The family will greet friends on Friday from 5-9pm with a prayer service at 6pm; Celebration of Life service at 10am Saturday, at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2618 Seneca Street St. Joseph, MO (816) 671-9473, under the direction of Pastor John Koch and Father Bill Walter.

Wanek, William W.

William “Bill” Walter Wanek, 67, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012.

Bill was born March 29, 1944 in St. Edward, NE to Walter and Marjorie (Morris) Wanek.

At age 12, the family moved to Fremont, NE. Bill was in the class of “62” at Fremont High. He lived in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, 1967 – 1988.

Bill married in August 1963. He was later divorced. June 10, 1972, he married Janelle Alm. She survives of the home.

Bill served in the United States Marine Corps for four years, spending 13 months in Vietnam as an Air crewman in Marine Helicopter Squadron 261.

Bill worked in the grocery industry for 25 years, from stock clerk to store manager. His last 20 years, he was an over-the-road truck driver.

Bill was a member of Masonic Lodge #229 of Ceresco, NE, for more than 40 years. He was also a member of USMC/COMBAT HELICOPTER ASSOC. and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. He was an avid golfer and a member of Duncan Hill Golf Course and loved to win a quarter or two off of his buddies.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by 5 children and step-children, Sherry Jackson and husband, Greg, from St. Joseph, Christy Buell from Lincoln, NE, and Carolyn Wanek from Lincoln, Jodie Jung from Manhattan, KS and Trent Alm of Kansas City, MO. Bill had 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Larry Wanek, Palm Spring, CA and Don Wanek, Wheatridge, CO.

Mr. Wanek has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Memorial Service 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Chapel. David H. Mejia officiated. The family will receive friends 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Bob Finchum, 80, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Carriage Square Health Care Center.

Bob was born in Avenue City on February 8, 1931. He attended school and graduated from Savannah High School. He was drafted to the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he returned to St. Joseph and began his career at Quaker Oats, retiring after 42 years.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Essie (Wilson) Finchum; brother, Clarence Finchum and sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Dale Shreves.

Bob is survived by his sister-in-law, Joyce Finchum, St. Joseph, MO; nieces, Jacqueline McClure, Clarksdale, MO, and Connie Stevenson, Cortez, CO; and nephews, Clarence Finchum, Muscatine, IA and John Finchum, St. Joseph, MO.

Graveside Services 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Savannah Cemetery, Savannah, MO, under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

The family will receive friends 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Atha, Dorothy

Dorothy Blanche (Delaney) Atha, 94, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, January 2, 2012, at Saxton Riverside Care Center.

Dorothy was born in St. Joseph on April 11, 1917, to John and Blanche (Burns) Delaney She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, St. Ann Altar Society, Quilting Club; St. Joseph Church of Easton’s Quilting Group; and Ladies Auxiliary of Knights of Columbus Council #571.

She married Bob Atha on April 30, 1941 in St. Joseph. He passed away on September 11, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sons, Raymond Michael and John Allen Atha; daughter-in-law, Janice Atha; and four brothers, Bernard, Maurice and Tom Delaney and Danny Karl.

Survivors include her son, Robert J. (Olga) Atha, St. Joseph, MO; daughters, Patricia (Alfred) Miller, St. Joseph, MO and Charlotte (Phillip) Chunn, Savannah, MO; daughter-in-law, Patti Atha, St. Joseph, MO; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; three sisters-in law, Juanita Gach, St. Joseph, MO, Peggy Horrigan, Louisville, KY and Sister Clairerita Atha, CSJ, St. Louis, MO; one brother-in-law, Paul (Jeanette) Atha, St. Joseph, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Family will receive friends 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, with a Rosary at 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Fenley, Gertrude

Gertrude Fenley, 87, St. Joseph, Passed away, January 1st, 2012 at her home.

Gertrude was born on March 20, 1924 to Andrew and Anna (English) Mott.

Gertrude was raised on a family farm near Lathrop, Missouri and graduated high school in 1942. She attended nurses training at Sister’s Hospital andgraduated in 1945 as a registered nurse. She married Warren Fenley on November 15, 1947 at Cathedral of St. Joseph.

She worked at Sister’s Hospital and as a school nurse at Co-Cathedral Grade School. Gertrude was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral for 70 years, and a member of the Registered Nurses Association since 1945. Her family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to her.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: George, Thurman, and John Mott; sister, Mary Templeton, and daughter-in-law, Merril Sue Fenley.

Surviving family includes husband, Warren F. Fenley, of the home; sons, Michael Fenley, Parkville, Missouri, and Matthew Fenley, Nacogdoches, Texas; grandchildren, Sarah, Mick, Emily, and Tyler; eight great-grandchildren, Hannah, Max, Maddie, Kennedy, Brody, Lillie, Gavin, and Gunnar; brothers, Andrew and Richard Mott; and sisters, Thelma Trawick, Betty Jo Rader, and Virginia Kline.

Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 am Thursday, at Cathedral of St. Joseph
Entombment Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 9:00 am Wednesday, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Stevenson, Webb E.

January 2, 2012

Webb Stevenson, of St. Joseph, passed away, Friday, December 30, 2011, at his home following a brief illness.

Webb was born on March 4, 1931, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Harold N. and Marian (Webb) Stevenson, and was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.

He married Katherine L. Sallee on June 3, 1961; she survives of the home.

Webb was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church and past member of the Wesleyan Sunday School class. He was a lifelong member of Sertoma, Beta Theta Pi and a member St. Joseph Historical Society

He was a graduate of Central High School 49’ers. He attended Washington and Lee University and graduated from University of Missouri with a degree in agriculture.

Following college he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a helicopter mechanic. After discharge, he farmed at Easton, Missouri and then joined Bennett Garden Center as a partner and vice-president. He was an insurance agent with Lucas, Hopkins, Stevenson Insurance Agency.

Retirement gave Webb time to spend as a volunteer tutor in the St. Joseph School System. He volunteered for 17 years at Bode Middle School. He also had the opportunity to tutor in ESL, English as a Second Language, working with families.

He received many awards including National Association of Partners in Education, National Outstanding Volunteer Award, Carnation Community Service Award, J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award and others.

These awards were recognition of his many years of volunteer service in education for children in Missouri. His recent years had been spent tutoring children at Avenue City, R-9 School.

He and his family were a licensed foster home in Andrew County, Missouri and served for 8 years. He was treasurer of the Missouri Foster Parent Association, and was active in the local Northwest Missouri Foster Parent Association. He was Co-founder of PACT, Parents and Children Together.

He shared with his wife Katherine, the David G. Berger Community Service Award, 2001; 13th Annual Mayor’s Thanksgiving Humanitarian Award and Avenue City School and Community Service Award.

Webb was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mary S. Tootle, and Barbara S. Broadhead.

Additional survivors include son, Christian T. Stevenson; daughters, Julie and husband Brian Redinger; Jill L. Massey; four grandchildren, Robert, Sarah, Daniel, and Joseph Webb; and nieces and nephews.

Services 1:30 pm Tuesday, at Ashland United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 pm

Webster, Donnie L.”Don”

Donnie L. “Don” Webster, 65 of Springfield, Missouri formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2011 surrounded by his family at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph following a Christmas visit.

Don was born on January 5, 1946 in Kirksville, Missouri to Thomas Milton and Edna Pearl Webster.

Don graduated from Lancaster High School in 1963. He graduated from Kansas City Business College and Moler Barber School where he received his license and perfected his trade at Chuck’s Barber Shop in St. Joseph. Don retired from the Missouri Air National Guard after 22 ½ years of service with the Security Police and was a sales rep for Seitz Foods in Springfield, Missouri, and currently operated Law Enforcement Promotions.

Don believed in supporting law enforcement and enjoyed the relationships he acquired within various Sheriff’s Departments all over the country.

You always knew what Don was thinking much to the dismay of his friends and family. He spent the last two weeks of his life doing exactly what he wanted to do and left this world doing it “HIS” way.

Don was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Tommy Webster.

He married Rebecca Sue Shepherd on November 5, 1969 in St. Joseph, Missouri, She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include one daughter, April D. Wyatt and husband, Marshall, St. Joseph, Missouri; one son, Todd J. Webster and wife, Trisha, Bolivar, Missouri; six grandchildren, Schuyler, McKinzie, Sierra, Ethan, Lola and Charlotte; mother -in-law Rose Marie “Pobie” Shepherd, St. Joseph, Missouri; brother-in-law, Roger L. Shepherd and wife Cheryl, Grapevine, Texas, sister-in-law, Joan Webster, Glenwood, Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews and his traveling companion, his dog, Tinker Belle.

Services 1:00pm Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 1:00pm Wednesday at our chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Mr. Webster will be cremated following the service. Graveside service 1:00pm Friday at the Arni Cemetery, Lancaster, Missouri.

The family would like to thank Dr. Anita Smith for her exceptional care and compassion in the last few days of Don’s life.

Don would like you to remember to hold the ones you love dearly and tell them why they are special –LOVE BIG!
