Millsap, Laura M. (Krumme)

Laura Marie (Krumme) Millsap, 38, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013.

Laura was born October 26, 1974 to Rodney & Phyllis Krumme of Faucett, Missouri.

She was a graduate of Missouri Western State University. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. She taught school at New York Elementary near Hamilton, Missouri in 1999 to 2001.

She married Shawn R. Millsap on August 12, 1995. In 2003 she suffered a hemorrhage that left her a quadriplegic. She bravely managed her home and raised her children, Brooklyn, 17, and Rylan, 14 from a hospital bed in her home. Laura was an inspiration to all who knew her. She rarely ever complained and lived out her faith daily.

Laura was a member of Sparta United Methodist Church, where she developed and led the Children’s Church Program, before she became paralyzed. She loved children, holidays, especially Christmas, church and flowers.

Laura was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Lewis Testerman, and her paternal grandparents, Tom & Carolyn Krumme.

Survivors: parents, husband, children, her maternal grandmother, Virginia Testerman, sisters, Becky (Billy) Hafley, Shelly (Jim) Wolfram, Merri (David) Wolfram, and Dawn (Matt) Smith, mother and father-in-law, Dennis and Karen Steeby, brother-in-law, Cody (Rachael) Millsap, sister-in-law, Rachael Millsap, 20 nieces and nephews, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Services 11:00 AM Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Sparta United Methodist Church.
Interment Sparta Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Friday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday.

Lewis, Thomas Jay

Thomas Jay Lewis, 62, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013, after a battle with cancer, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Tom was born November 28, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana, to Fred H. and Anne D. (Deck) Lewis. He was a 1969 graduate of Southwest High School of Kansas City. Tom obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1973, his Masters in Teaching in 1974 and a Masters in Counseling in 1975, all from Northwest Missouri State University.

Tom married Ramona R. Radley on May 19, 1973 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, she survives of the home. He worked for Savannah R3 School District for 32 years, employed as a teacher, counselor, technical director and coach for girls and boys tennis.

Tom was honored as 1998-1999 Missouri State High School Activities Association 1A-3A Tennis Coach of the Year and 2000 National Federation Coaches Association Girls Tennis Coach of the Year Missouri.
He was also named 2002 Savannah R3 School District Teacher of the Year.

Tom was a devoted son, father, husband and papa. He enjoyed his family, Church, traveling and woodworking. Jigsaw puzzles, camping and painting were additional hobbies.

Tom belonged to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Savannah for 30 years. He served as deacon, elder, Church board chairman, Sunday School teacher and youth group leader. He was also a member of the Sanctuary Choir and Handbell Choir (Caryl Chimers).

Tom was also a charter member of the River Bluffs Regional Library Board of Trustees.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and a set of stillborn twin brothers.

Additional survivors include daughters, Cindy (Andrew) Price, Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Kelly (Tim) Jones, Savannah, Beth (Justin) Malotte, St. Joseph, Missouri; one granddaughter, Jordin Price, Excelsior Springs; and brother, Fred (Linnea) Lewis, Portland, Oregon.

Celebration of Life 10 am, Friday at First Christian Church, Savannah. Visitation will begin after 12 noon, Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday evening at First Christian Church. Mr. Lewis has been cremated.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Aseracare Hospice, Savannah School District Foundation or First Christian Church of Savannah.

Elkins, Jean

Jean Elkins, 89, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013, surrounded by her family and loved ones at a local health care center.

Jean was born on August 12, 1924, in Maryville, MO to William F. and Maude (Bainum) Phares.

She married Wheaton Elkins on March 30, 1945, in Troy, KS. They were married 64 years. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and son, Daniel Eugene Elkins; her parents and one brother William F. Phares, Jr.

Jean was co-owner of Elkins Abstract and later managed St. Joseph Title.

Survivors include her sons, Randy Elkins, Frederick, MD and Sam Elkins, St. Joseph, MO; daughter-in-law, Ann Elkins, St. Joseph, MO; grandchildren, Christene, Jesse, Wheat, Sean and Alexis; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Aldrich, of AR and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Elkins has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation or services.

Snapp, Jolinda “Jo” Kae

Jolinda Kae “Jo” Snapp, 65, of St. Joseph, passed away Monday August 26, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Jo was born to Charles J. and Rita (Feiden) Dwyer and was raised in St. Joseph; she graduated from Lafayette High School, Class of 1965.

She was married twice and found her true love of 20 years, Gary F. Kretzer, Sr., he survives of the home.

She worked at Mead for 31 years; after they closed she then worked as a tele-recruiter at the Community Blood Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Douglas Dwyer.

Additional surviving family includes son, Chris Gilmore and wife, Marilyn; daughter, Jody Snapp, both of St. Joseph; step-children, Kimberly Charfauros, and husband, Dennis; Gary Kretzer, Jr., and wife, Shannon; and Amy Kretzer, grandchildren, C.J. Snapp, David and Cameron Gilmore, Alec Fannon, Lilly Charfauros, Emma, Molly and Max Kretzer.

Jo has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Rosanna Kay Foulk, 60, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013 from complications after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A dedicated and loving mother, Rosanna is survived by son, Scott Foulk, daughter, Heather Foulk-Metcalf, and grandchildren, Tory Foulk, Remi Foulk, and Everleigh Foulk.

Rosanna was born on December 9, 1952 to Everett and Rose Hughes. Rosanna is also survived by her siblings, Mike Hughes, Paul Hughes, Julia Mann, Felicia Nickell, James Hughes and Angela Mikles. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rose Elizabeth Hughes and husband, Forrest E. Foulk.

Mrs. Foulk has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Gayle S. Rogers, 93, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013.

Gayle was born on May 22, 1920 to George and Susie Stallsworth in St. Joseph. Gayle married Paul J. Rogers, May 7, 1942. They were married for 60 years. Paul preceded her in death in 2002.

She worked for the Douglas Candy Co. and the St. Joseph School system in the cafeteria. She was a life long member of Savannah Avenue Baptist Church.

Gayle loved cooking, loved her church and loved being with her family and friends.

Survivors: one son, Jack and wife, Judy; grandchildren, Angie (Tim) Wilson, great-grandson, Hunter Wilson, Jennifer (Craig) Stanek; great-granddaughter, Sara, Brooke and (Colby Muff), and Jeff Rogers, Ryan Havener and Chris Havener; 6 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

Ashley, Virgil M. “Pete”

Virgil M. “Pete” Ashley, 85, of St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013 at his home.

Pete was born on August 26, 1927 in St. Joseph to Charles and Zolah (Lane) Ashley.
He graduated from Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, and served in the United States Navy and Army. He later worked for Wire Rope Co. for 30 years until his retirement in 1993.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and he was known as the “River Rat”. He was a charter member of the Missouri Big Buck Club and held the number 1 spot for the largest deer rack for 2 years in a row.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Martin Ashley, and nephew, Joe Miller.

Surviving family includes daughter, Kelly (Joe) Barber, of St. Joseph; companion and partner in crime, Mona Kurtz, of the home; grandson, Drew and granddaughter, Jillian “Papa’s Varmints”, sister, Charlene (Frank) Miller, Louisville, KY; and 3 nephews, Greg Ashley, Brad Ashley and Robert Miller.

Services 10:00 AM Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, in St. Joseph.

Cosby, MO-Jerry Gascoigne, 74, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2013. at a St. Joseph health care center.

Jerry was born on July 26, 1939, in Ravenna, Nebraska, to George and Addie Rosalea (Duncan) Gascoigne.

He retired after 41 years as an Engineer for BNSF. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 359 and Eagles Lodge #49.

He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents who raised him, Ellsworth and Delpha Duncan; and paternal grandparents, Joseph (Amanda) Gascoigne.

Jerry married Carolyn Barton on May 29, 1959, at the Methodist Church in Ravenna, Nebraska. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his sons, Kenny, Ravenna, NE, Roger and Brian Gascoigne of St. Joseph, MO, Greg (Karen), Callaway, NE; ten grandchildren; brother, Carl Olson; sister, Karlene Larson, sister-in-law, Connie McKeon and mother-in-law, Wilma Barton.

Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2013 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel where the family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening.

A Celebration of life will be held at a later date in Ravenna, Nebraska, with inurnment at Highland Cemetery in Ravenna.

Biggerstaff, Cyndie

Cyndie Biggerstaff, 55, lifelong resident of St. Joseph, MO, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at her home.

Cyndie was born on October 4, 1957 in St. Joseph, to John Lewis and Thelma Jane (Brown) Biggerstaff. She was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1975. She attended Missouri Western State University. She worked at Shanin Pharmacy, Citi Bank and in 1993 she worked for what is now Triumph Foods.

Cyndie is survived by one brother Kevin Biggerstaff of St. Joseph, MO; one niece, Elizabeth Goudeau and nephew, C.J. Goudeau, both of Kansas City, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Services 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.
Interment Savannah Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Monday at the chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Brian K. Hockaday, 47, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013 surrounded by family and great friends after a long hard battle with cancer.

He was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Emory B. and Judy I. (Brown) Hockaday. He graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph in 1983. He was employed at Jamieson’s Machine & Supply Co. for 26 years.

He married Denise Norris on March 8, 1986 at McCarthy Baptist Church in St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Denise Hockaday, of 27 years of marriage, 2 sons, Cody and Aaron, and a daughter, Hailey Hockaday; his brother, Mike and his wife, Michelle, one grandson Elijah, 2 nieces Xaine & Melia, and nephew, Noah.

He was a devoted son, father, husband and papa. He is already greeting his family and fishing with his dad again even though they aren’t catching anything. He will be missed greatly by all.

Mr. Hockaday has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Jerry was born on April 21, 1948 in St. Joseph to Donald and Elaine (Krumme) Deatherage. They preceded him in death.

Surviving: three sons: Jeff, Brian and Mark (Allison) and 3 grandchildren: Ronnie Phroper, Jayden and Carder Deatherage. Brother: Gene (Judy) Deatherage. Sister: Sue (Randy) Townsend and Friend: Judy Meade.

Bill Davis, 78, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, Missouri.

Bill was born on March 24, 1935 in Tarkio, Missouri to Orville C. and Delpha (Hughes) Davis.

He graduated from Tarkio High School. He worked 38 years at the St. Joseph News-Press & Gazette. He was owner & operator of Carol Ann’s Café.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, son, Mark Davis, one brother, and five sisters.

Surviving family includes wife of 58 years of marriage, Carol Davis, of the home; son, Eddie Davis, of Smithville; daughters, Susan (Kevin) Davis Keller, St. Joseph; Penney (Richard) Adams, of Amazonia; and Vicki Davis, also of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Ryan, Sara, Cindy, Matthew, Ryan, Christopher, Blake and Bradley; 14 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Davis has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Valencia, Leo

Leo Valencia, 87, of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at KU Medical Center.

Mr. Valencia was born October 22, 1925 in St. Joseph to Marcus and Cruz (Hernandez) Valencia. He attended Christian Brothers High School and St. Joseph Junior College. He served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the General E.T. Collins, later worked at Swift and Company, and retired as a Retail Meat Cutter in 1990. On October 30, 1948 he married Elizabeth J. Mejia in St. Joseph, she survives of the home.

Leo was a WWII Honoree, a charter member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where he performed many volunteer services. He was also an active member of the Notre Dame Alumni Club, American Legion, VFW Post #1668, Retail Meat Cutters, UFCW and served on the St. Joseph Planning Commission from 1987 to 1992,

After his retirement in 1990, Leo enjoyed traveling with his family and treasured spending time with all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid Notre Dame fan making many trips to Notre Dame football games. He was very active in St. Joseph Boys Baseball and instrumental in the development of Hochman Field. He was very devoted to Our Lady of Guadalupe, making several trips to the Shrine in Mexico City.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Louis Valencia; sister, Carmen Jefferson and three step-brothers Jesse, Manuel and Frank Valencia.

Mr. Valencia is also survived by his children; Gloria A. Nikes, Kathy J. Ziolkowski, and Lynn Valencia McMillian of St. Joseph and Richard M. Valencia of Melbourne, Florida; grandchildren; Amy Ray, Gary L. Ziolkowski, Jr., Steve Nikes, II, Darcy (Nikes) Brown, Lanie Nikes, Taylor McMillian, Cole McMillian, Erin Valencia, Mollie Valencia and Patrick Valencia; great-grandchildren; London Ray, Saylor Ray, Canyon Ray, Mclayne Ziolkowski and Cash Ziolkowski; sister Delores Moyer, St. Joseph nephews David and Danny Moyer, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews

Visitation will begin after 9:00AM Friday, August 23, 2013 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 7:00PM Friday evening at the chapel where the family will receive friends until 8:30PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 Noon Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Kirkpatrick, Dorothy H.

Dorothy H. Kirkpatrick, 97, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013, at a local health care facility.
Dorothy was born May 27, 1916, in Stanton, Nebraska, the daughter of William H. and Mary Jane (Wainscott) Buckendahl. She graduated from Stanton High School.
She married James E. Kirkpatrick on February 15, 1941 in West Point, NE. After spending the first few years of their marriage in Nebraska, they moved to Northwest Missouri, where she lived out her life. She was a farm wife for many years, and her skills at cooking led to her career, cooking. She cooked and retired from the D & G Restaurant.
She was a member of Zion Church. She enjoyed painting ceramics, gardening, bowling, traveling and cooking. Her cooking always led to a kitchen full of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, James Emory, Jr.; brothers, Lloyd and William Buckendahl; sisters, Phyllis and Arlene Spath; grandchildren, Martin J. Barnes, Wendy Jo Denune and infant, Joshua Gawatz.
Survivors include her sister, Betty Molocek, Columbus, NE; sons, Kenneth, St. Joseph, Ron (Claudia), Casa Grande, AZ, Mike (Deanna) St. Joseph, MO; daughters, Arlyss Maze, Reynoldsburg, OH, Betty Morgan (Richard), St. Joseph, MO; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

J.K.Fields, 77, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013, at his home.

J.K. was born and raised in Scott County, Virginia. He worked at Tennessee Eastman Corp. He moved to Northwest Missouri, 35 years ago. He was known and respected for training hunting dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Paralee (Walden) Fields.

J.K. is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Steadman, of the home;his children, Sherry Leachman, St. Joseph, MO, Mark Fields (Paula David), St. Joseph, MO, Tim Fields (Reniea) King City, MO, Jeffrey Fields, and Christopher (Marilyn) Fields, St. Joseph, MO; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Fields has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Carrie Lynn Cook, 45, Amazonia, Missouri, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 18, 2013 at her home.

Carrie was born October 28, 1967 in Saint Joseph, Missouri to Dwayne and Barbara (Childers) Cook, they survive of Amazonia.

Carrie loved her sons and grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing and jewelry making.

Survivors include; sons, Carl Jacob Cook, Austin Dwayne Cook, both of Saint Joseph; two grandchildren, Micah and Kiya Cook; brother, Brian (Eva) Cook, Amazonia; grandmother, Jennie Cook, Saint Joseph; nephew, Nathan Cook; niece, Emily Schmille; numerous cousins; special friends, Susie Fortune and Sharon Grey.

Ms. Cook has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. A register book will be available to sign at the Chapel.

Danvers, Jane Ann

Jane Ann Danvers, 63, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Jane was born June 21, 1950 to Kenneth and Helen (Saunders) Bowlin in Saint Joseph, Missouri. She was a 1968 Savannah High School graduate and a 1969 graduate of Gard Business University.

Jane had worked as an executive secretary in Savannah and Saint Joseph. In 1972, she moved to California and continued her employment as a typesetter. She later worked at Apple Computer Corporate Headquarters, until her retirement in 1990.

Jane enjoyed old movies, music, reading and later in life, gardening and rock landscaping.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; and infant brother, Stephen.

Survivors include brother, Roger (Cindy) Bowlin, Savannah; nephew, Raymond Bowlin; niece, Tiffany (Nick) Crawford; and great-niece, Lyla,

Nix, Robert Dixon

Bob Nix, 74, St. Joseph MO passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Bob was born in Malvern Arkansas to Edgar R. and Sara Dixon Nix. He was a 1957 graduate of Pryor Oklahoma and earned a Bachelor’s degree at Northeast Oklahoma State University. He served in the US Air Force from 1962-1969.
Bob was employed at Texaco Inc. in Wichita and Salina Kansas, as a Sales Representative. He then was self-employed at Hi-Plains Oil Co. as a Texaco Distributor in Norton Kansas. Bob moved to Harrison Arkansas to become a salesman for E.A. Martin Machinery Company. He retired after 30 years working with Dean Machinery in St. Joseph, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Janell Holt.
Bob was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was a 32nd degree mason.
He married Jeanie Dougherty on December 14, 1962. She survives of the home: also survived by son, Jay W Nix and wife Carmen, Kansas City MO, daughter Lori J Nix and Kathleen Gerber of Brooklyn, NY and son-in-law, Bruce E. Holt, Springfield, MO; and grandchildren Avery and Eli Nix, Kansas City, MO and Hudson and Harrison Holt, Springfield, MO.
Mr. Nix has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 23rd, 2013 at Wesley United Methodist Church-St. Joseph MO.

Wilcox, Charles Spencer

Charles Spencer Wilcox, 95, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away on August 10, 2013 at his home.
Charles was born on October 10, 1917, in St. Joseph to Sam and Effie (Spencer) Wilcox.
Charles married Louise Marguerite Carder on January 31, 1948, who survives at the home.
Charles graduated from the University of Missouri receiving degrees in business and law. Charles was a member of the Missouri Bar Association for over 50 years. During this time, Charles was the first attorney to represent Missouri Western State College and served in that capacity for over 31 years.
In 1942, Charles was the first St. Joseph attorney drafted into World War II. Charles served his county in the army for five years in the South Pacific stationed in Australia. Charles was assigned to the Allied Intelligence Bureau which provided support to Pacific island Coastwatchers. Charles was discharged from the army as a Major in 1946.
Charles was a Mason, St. Joseph Lodge #78 and a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Charles was a member of the Moila Shriners, Royal Order of Jesters, Order of the Eastern Star, American Trial Lawyers Association, St. Joseph Country Club, Benton Club, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, and Lions Club. Charles also served on the Boards of United Way, Family Guidance Center, Red Cross and Y.M.C.A.
Charles was a Lifelong Elder at First Christian Church of St. Joseph.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his sister, Dorothy McGrail.
He is survived by his wife, Louise and three children; Jane (Wilcox) Hibler, Leawood, KS; Ellen (Wilcox) Cunat, Baltimore, MD; Todd Wilcox, Denver, CO; and five grandchildren; Spencer Hibler, Overland Park, KS; Jennifer Hibler, Chicago, IL; Kaitlin Cunat, Baltimore, MD; Kylie Wilcox, Denver, CO; Spencer Wilcox, Denver, CO.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Monday, August 12, 2013 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph, where the family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday evening.
A Private Family service will be held at a later date.

Fennewald, Dolores Agnes

Dolores Agnes Fennewald, 75, of St. Joseph, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dolores was born on January 4, 1938 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Joseph J. and Anna J. (Stock) Sosinski. Dolores graduated from St. Francis Xavier Grade School and the Convent of the Sacred Heart. She also attended St. Joseph Junior College. She was employed at the Mechanic’s Bank and also worked at the Hereford Journal in Kansas City.

Dolores married John H. Fennewald on September 29, 1962. Following the birth of her first child, she became a devoted stay at home mom. As a strong supporter of catholic education, she guided her children through St. Francis Xavier Grade School and Bishop LeBlond High School.

Dolores was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and was actively involved in many church and school activities including the Daughters of Isabella, Ladies of Charity, St. Francis Altar Society and Sacred Heart Alumni. She also served on the St. Francis Funeral Luncheon and Prayer List Committees.

During her lifetime, Dolores was an avid bowler, walker, bridge player and fan of Mizzou sports and Chiefs football. She also enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to travel abroad on a number of occasions. Everyone enjoyed her wonderful cooking. Most of all, she loved being a grandma and spending time with her family and friends.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John, of the home; four children, Vicki Phillips and husband, Jim, of Urbandale, Iowa; Stacey Treu and husband, Bill, of Bellevue, Nebraska; Julie Fennewald, of Lenexa, Kansas; Mark Fennewald and wife, Amy, of Greenwood, Missouri; grandchildren, Ashley Phillips; Christopher, Jeffrey and Jessica Treu; and Afton and Zachary Fennewald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at Noon on Monday Daughters of Isabella / Ladies of Charity Rosary will be recited at 4:00 PM and a Parish Rosary will be recited at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel at 6:00 PM Monday with the family receiving friends until 8:00 PM.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Fennewald Family Academic Excellence Fund at Bishop LeBlond High School or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Clark, Marthe A.

Marthe A. Clark, 91, St. Joseph, MO, passed away August 7, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Marthe was born on December 1, 1921, in Kansas City, MO, to Melvin N. and Luna D. (Wickizer) Alexander.

Marthe was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Charles Clark; and one grandson, Jeffrey Koehly.

Survivors include her children, Michael Koehly (Ben), Judith Rittman (Eric), Pat Clark, (Sherri), Debbie Clark and Lisa Barnes, (Richard); ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and her caregiver and dear friend, Darla Nitti.

Mrs. Clark has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

Tolbert, Allie Lorene

Allie Lorene Tolbert, 90, formerly of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Friday, August 2, 2013, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, MO.

Allie was born on June 11, 1923, in St. Joseph to Charles M. and Inez E, (Moore) Brooner. She was a graduate of Benton High School. She then served as a Stenographer in the U.S. Navy Waves during WW II. Allie married Joseph E Tolbert on January 22, 1950 in St. Joseph.

Allie was a member of Community of Christ Church and the DAV. She enjoyed bowling, playing the accordion, gardening and planting. She was a homemaker and also was a bus driver for the St. Joseph School District.

Allie was preceded in death by parents; husband; sons, Joseph E. Tolbert, Jr. and David Tolbert and two brothers, Richard and Orman Brooner.

Survivors include two sisters, Jean Garreth, Easton, MO and Carolyn N. (Pat) Hedrick, Chicago, IL area; Bill (Bonnie) Brooner, St. Joseph, MO; children, Bonnie Clinton, Richard Tolbert and Charlotte Parker; and several grandchildren and geat-grandchildren.

Visitation begins after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, MO. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

A memorial service will be at a future date at The Abundant Life Center in St. Joseph, MO.

Gray, Leafhie Mae

Leafhie Mae Gray, 92, of Savannah, Missouri formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013, at LaVerna Village Nursing Home.

Leafhie was born September 10, 1920, in Melrose, Ohio, to Charles Allen and Nora Ellen (Cotterman) Gillette. She was a member of Hillcrest Bible Church and attended Hosanna Fellowship. She had been a homemaker, worked at Abersold Green House, and Noma Lites. She was an ordained minister and worked in Nursing Home Ministry.

In 1947, Leafhie and her husband started a radio program in Atchison, Kansas and also was involved in other various radio programs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lon Whitfield Gray, parents; daughter, Rebekah Lou Simpson, son, Donald Lee Gray; one brother, Frank Gillette and one sister, Mary Waggoner.

Survivors include her daughters, Mical Parker (Ron), Linda Watkins (Weldon); sons, Larry Gray (Nancy) and Lonnie Gray (Vickie); sister, Helen Clear and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Service 1:00 p.m. Monday at Hosanna Fellowship, 17290 US Highway 71 North. Interment Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

Klever, Gretchen R.

August 2, 2013

Gretchen R. Klever, 68, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013 at her home.

Gretchen was born on January 21, 1945 in Harlan, Iowa to Wallace Allan and Naomi May (Scott) Kinsinger. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School, Belle Plaine, Iowa, in 1963 and recently worked at Wal-Mart for 15 years as a cashier before her retirement in 2012. Gretchen was also a member of Central Christian Church in St. Joseph.

Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister and nephew, Mark Goerke.

Surviving family includes children, David A. (Janet Kaye) Klever, St. Joseph; Teresa Grimm and Ricky Klever, both of Marengo, Iowa; sister Linda H. Goerke, of St. Joseph,; brothers, James Kinsinger, of St. Joseph, and Robert Kinsinger, of Manhattan, Kansas; step-grandchildren, Candyce Johnson, Jayla Bressman, Brittany Clark, Daren and Dustin Grimm, and Ashley Klever; 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services 11:00 AM Monday, August 5, 2013 at Heaton Bowman Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

Ms. Klever will be cremated following the service.

Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM Sunday at our chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday evening.

Hoover, Vernelle

Ruth Vernelle Hoover, 89, of Rea, Missouri, passed away, Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Heartland Hospital, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Except for a short time in Oklahoma and Montana, she lived in Andrew and Buchanan counties her entire life. She attended Rosendale High School and Gard Business School, St. Joseph. She was a member of Rea Union Church where she was pianist for many years.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Hobert H. Hoover, parents, Claude and Alice Kent and a brother and sister-in-law, Caryl and Ruby Kent.

Survivors include nieces, Carolyn Taylor, Sue Meadows and Linda Slayden, several cousins in Missouri and Oklahoma.

Graveside Services 10:00 AM Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Bennett Lane Cemetery under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Friday at our Savannah Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rea Union Church or to Hands of Hope Hospice.

Pendleton, JoAnn

JoAnn Pendleton, 70, of Union Star, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

JoAnn was born on August 19, 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

She graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1960 and from Missouri Western State University in 1983. She later worked and retired from Neighborhood Housing Services.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband, Verl L. Pendleton, Sr.

Surviving family includes daughters, Barbara (Ron) Steiner and Susan (Bob) Bennett-Ward, aunt, Jacqueline (Donnie) Scott-Michaels, uncle, Bill Russell and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins.

Mrs. Pendleton has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

A Celebration of Life will be held 7:00 PM Saturday, August 3, 2013 at JoAnn’s Home.
