Paul M. Beck, M.D., 95, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012, at his home.
Dr. Beck was born on April 14, 1917, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Paul H and Anna (Martin) Beck. He was raised in Oak Park, Il. He graduated from Grinnell College, B.A.’39 and Northwestern University Medical School, M.D. ’43. He served in Europe in WWII as a Medical Officer in the Army obtaining the rank of Captain. He received the EAME Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars and two Oversea Service Bars. He started a general practice in Springfield, Il. He went on to pursue a specialty in Ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago. He moved to St. Joseph in 1955 and practiced there until he retired in 1994.
Dr. Beck was a member of the American Medical Association, MO State Medical Association, Buchanan County Medical Society and St. Joseph Rotary Club. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He was on the Founding Board of Directors of the Missouri Ophthalmological Society, Inc. (now MoSEPS.)
He was married to Margaret Knowlton on February 14, 1941 at Euclid United Methodist Church, Oak Park, Ill. She died April 20, 1970.
He married Gertrude Barton on October 8, 1971 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Easton, MO. She survives of the home.
He is survived by his children: Elizabeth Beck (Kenneth Hulse) St. Louis, MO, James Beck (Susanne McHale), St. Louis, MO, Paul Beck (Christine Stallings), Bethany, MO, John Beck (Sarah Moses), Portland, OR, Ann Miller (Brandon), Clarksdale, MO, Robert Beck (Judy Blizzard), St. Joseph, MO and Joan Combs (Matt), St. Joseph, MO;
grandchildren: Charlene and Meg Hogenson, Elizabeth and Peg Hulse, Andrew, Christian and Michael Stallings, Sarah Beck, Knowlton Beck, Sage and Dylan Miller, Maeby Beck, Truman and Cobain Blizzard; and great-grandchildren, Margo and Madeline Male.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter, Margaret Jeanne Hogenson.
Dr. Beck has been cremated. A Memorial Service to celebrate Dr. Beck’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.
Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel, where family will receive friends 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hands of Hope Hospice or to American Red Cross.
