Steven Wayne Bennett, 49, St. Joseph, Missouri born July 26, 1960 in Atchison, Kansas died at KU Medical Center April 3, 2010, after a brave fight against cancer.
Steve earned his bachelors in English and Political Science and a minor in Journalism at Missouri Western State University. For 20 years, he reported and edited for the St. Joseph News-Press and Atchison Globe.
Steve then earned his masters in secondary English education at Northwest Missouri State University. He enjoyed teaching for 10 years at Truman Middle School, Central High School, Missouri Western State University, William Crisman High School, Independence, Missouri and Princeton, Missouri High School.
He earned his Eagle Scout and served at Camp Geiger through his teen years. He loved literature, NFL football (especially the Kansas City Chiefs) and enjoyed family activities, especially attending his sons’ ballgames.
Steve lived life with a kind and gentle heart that belongs to Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his parents; Patricia (Weiland) Bennett, Robert and Linda (step-mother) Bennett; ex-wife, Karen Orban; son, Beau Bennett, 14; step-son, Preston LaFollette, 21; sister and brother-in-law, Kelley and Roger Wilson; niece, Melissa; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Steve was preceded in death by his step-son, Tyson Mejia and grandparents.
Services 2 pm, Monday Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Burial Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family suggests contributions to American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 1120 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64105 or a college fund for his son, Beau Bennett. at U S Bank, St. Joseph, Missouri.
