Bernie Coffman Haviland, 89, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Living Community of St. Joseph.

Bernie was born on October 26, 1920 in Marshall, Arkansas to Edward and Ella (Adams) Denton.

She married Avon Coffman on August 23, 1941 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He preceded her in death in 1988. She later married Holmes Haviland on June 12, 1993. He preceded her in death in 2006. She was a widow of two World War II Veterans.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Mark Coffman; granddaughter, Angela Coffman; six brothers and sisters.
She graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in St. Joseph on August 23, 1941. Bernie was an R.N. employed by the United States Navy. She was a member of Joyce Raye Patterson Kitchen Klatter Band, 58 year member of PEO Chapter FP and Order of Eastern Star, Forest City, Missouri for over 50 years.

She is survived by her children, Sandy (Howard) Dozier, St. Joseph, Missouri; Dr. Avon Curtis Coffman (Linda), Leawood, Kansas, Chris (Rich) Ferguson, Lees Summit, Missouri, niece, Frances Murphy, who spent many summers in Oregon; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Sandy, Curt and Chris, and family, want to especially thank the wonderful staff at Living Community for their special care and love always given to our Special Mama, to Three Rivers Hospice and their dedicated, caring staff, and the multitude of friends she leaves behind, of which there are too many to name, but you know who you are and we love you all.

Bernie was a beautiful lady who touched so many lives. May we all cherish those special memories. We will miss her terribly.

Memorial Service 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will begin after 1:30 p.m. Saturday at our chapel.

Memorials can be made to the Moila Shriners Children Hospitals, transportation fund or Three Rivers Hospice.
