Madlyn L. Bowland, 94, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 28, 2010, at a St. Joseph health care center.
Madlyn was born on September 9, 1915, in Dallas City, Illinois, to Louis and Estelle (Roberts) Rock. Her family moved to Bedford, Iowa, where she graduated from High School. After graduation, she moved to Savannah, MO, where she met and married Martin L. “Roy” Bowland.
In 1942, they moved to Florida, while Roy was in the service. They moved back to St. Joseph, where she worked at Sears, Sun Garment and Wyeth Hardware, from where she retired. In 1978, she moved to Peoria, AZ for fifteen years, then moved back to St. Joseph in 1992.
Madlyn was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church; King Hill Chapter, O.E. S.; Pony Express Blind Club; Ladies Sewing Club of Moila Shrine Temple; and a volunteer at Heartland Regional Medical Center and Boswell Hospital, in Sun City, AZ.
Madlyn was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Loren Rock and niece, LaDonna Fischer. She is survived by her husband and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Cremation to follow the service. Inurnment at a later date.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Monday at the Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday evening.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Ashland United Methodist Church.
