George Washington Benner, Jr. “J.R.”, 63, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his sleep, while at his home, surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with cancer.
J.R. was born on December 6, 1946, to George Washington Benner, Sr. and Nadine Benner-Joslin.
George and Deana Kay Embrey were married on March 21, 1986. She survives of the home, along with their son, Ian George Benner. Also surviving, are daughters, Kellie R. Benner, St. Joseph, MO, Angela Harris Karl, Amazonia, MO, Tabatha Clements and her husband Jeffrey of Savannah, MO; Angel Benner of St. Joseph and his son, Jacob Benner and Mandi Pulley of Savannah, MO; seventeen grandchildren, Mathieu Smith, Nathanial Gann, Patrik Patton, Wyatt Roberts, MyKayla Roberts, Patrick Karl, III, Makinze Karl, Jesica Phelan, Alexander Phelan, Kara Allison, Karlie Carpenter, Mariah Benner, J.C. Scott, Jacob Benner, Jr., Payton Scott, Annabelle Benner and Nicholas Benner; one great-grandchild, Aerin Smith; sister, Barbara Reed and husband Paul, Amazonia, MO and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many lifelong friends.
J.R. was preceded in death by his father; niece, Heather Gross and step-father Edward Joslin.
J.R. worked for several factories in his lifetime. He was a night supervisor at Blue Side and was a laborer at Johnson Controls. He drove a delivery truck to area businesses which he enjoyed. He also worked as an exterminator. He had a passion for old cars and motorcycles and loved to go to car shows in the area. He was a longtime member of the Pony Express Van Club.
He enjoyed being a stay-at-home Dad for Ian. He loved being around his kids and grandkids, whom he loved. He enjoyed the time he spent with his mother, going out to eat. He also was very fond of the Burger King gang on St. Joseph Avenue
There will be no visitation, but a memorial service is being planned for a later date
