Willard “Bill” Dunning, 89, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 7, 2010 at a local health care center.
Bill was born November 12, 1920 to Milo and Helen (Lang) Dunning in Greenleaf, Kansas. He attended Lake High School in Winfield, Kansas. Bill was a member of First Christian Church.
Bill retired as a captain with the United States Air Force after a 20 year career, and then became an aircraft parts salesman for Aviall. He had an A & P license, as an aircraft mechanic.
He married Laura Belle Phelps, with whom he shared 39 years until her passing in 2003. He later married Shirley Smith in 2009, and they were blessed with a loving year until she preceded him in death February 9, 2010.
Also preceding Bill were his parents; one brother, Marvin Dunning; and step-son, Gary Phelps.
Survivors include daughter-in- law, Carolyn Phelps; three nephews, Alan (Cathy) Dunning, Savannah, Missouri; David (Mary) Dunning, St. Joseph, Denney (Janet) Dunning, Easton, Missouri; one niece, Deigh (Pete) Guardado, St. Joseph; and Shirley’s children and grandchildren who held a special place in his heart.
Services 10 am, Tuesday First Christian Church. Visitation will begin after 10 am Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday evening.. Interment Bethany Church Cemetery, Barnard, Missouri. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Hands of Hope Hospice or First Christian Church.
