Lloyd D. Grote, of Sammamish, Washington passed away at Providence Marianwood nursing home, Sammamish on Sunday, January 31, 2010. He was 88 years old.

Lloyd was born on July 2, 1921 in Berwick, Kansas, the son of August and Frieda Grote. He was raised in Sabetha, Kansas and graduated from Highland Community College, Highland, Kansas in 1942 and served as fireman second class beginning December 14, 1944 and finally as third assistant engineer in the United States Merchant Marines until his discharge on April 24, 1945. Lloyd moved to Manhattan, Kansas and enrolled at Kansas State University, receiving his Professional Mechanical and Electrical Engineering License in June of 1950. He then accepted a job with St. Joseph Light & Power Company, St. Joseph, Missouri where he met and married his wife Frances Willman on January 10, 1953.

In 1970 Lloyd accepted the position of Assistant Director of Public Utilities for Hamilton, Ohio and moved his family there in January of that year. He retired from this position in March of 1992. He moved to Sammamish in August of 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Rolland and Harold of Sabetha, Kansas. He was also preceded in death by his son, L. Dale, Jr., in 1990; and his wife, Frances, in 1998.

Survivors include daughter, Jane, of Sammamish, Washington; daughter, Sarah, of Washington D.C; and son, John, of Morrow, Ohio. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

A funeral mass was held 9am, Friday, February 5, 2010 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sammamish, Washington.

A committal service will take place at Horigan Chapel at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 10:30am. Father Joseph Powers officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the committal.
