Clyde L. “Pete” Heckel, 83, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at a local health care facility.

Pete was born on May 20, 1926 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Mathias and Berla (Belton) Heckel. He was a Traffic Manager with Whitaker Cable Company for over 32 years, retiring in 1984.

He married Patricia J. Srite on June 28, 1947 in St. Joseph. She preceded him in death on April 9, 1996.

Pete served in the United States Army and was wounded during World War II and later received a purple heart. He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #359 and he also served with their funeral honors team, member of 40 & 8 Club and also D.A.V. chapter #6.

Pete was a state certified day care provider and a grandpa to all. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bowling, softball and coaching.

Survivors include his children, David Heckel and wife, Paula, Danny Heckel and wife, Sharon, Shelley Obermier and Victoria Evans and husband, Walt all of St. Joseph, Missouri; ten grandchildren, Paula Wood, Sarah Phillips, John Obermier, Jr., Erin Evans, Kyle Evans, Tera Evans, Kelsie Heckel, Samantha Heckel, Jason Peery and Bret Peery; five great-grandchildren, Brendin and Cydney Wood, Tristin and Reagan Phillips and Zoey Evans; one brother, Richard Heckel of Littleton, Colorado.

Services 11am Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 1pm Wednesday at our chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

The family suggests memorials to Hands of Hope Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.
