Michael Coleman Hoover died unexpectedly February 17, 2010 at North Kansas City Hospital following complications from surgery. He was born September 9, 1942 to Robert and Jeannette (Coleman) Hoover and grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
Michael was graduated from Southern Illinois University with a B.A. degree in Political Science, followed by an M.A. in Sociology. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, earning a Ph.D. in Sociology. He taught at the College of St. Catherine in Minnesota, Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and completed his career with 21 years teaching Sociology and encouraging high academic standards at Missouri Western State University. He retired in 1998. Michael loved learning and earned another M.A. degree in Counseling from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
Michael was a reader and was never bored. He enjoyed bird watching, walks, naps, travel, hiking in the mountains and just sitting and watching tv with his cats and dogs.
Michael leaves his “main squeeze” of 30 years, wife Susan Elizabeth Sollars and their large family of rescued animals. He is survived by daughter, Leah Hoover Eckley “Derek” and grandchildren Nick and Emily Eckley, all of Tucson, AZ and daughter Ani Hoover of Buffalo, NY. Michael was so proud that his girls had become strong, resourceful, creative women.
Michael also is survived by his sister Ellan Hoover Maynard, her husband
Peyton, and their children Joel and Anna of Raleigh, NC; brother Dan Hoover, Wellesley, MA, niece Cary Hoover, Colorado Springs, CO and nephew Bryan Hoover, Minocqua, WI. They will always remember and miss his, “Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!”
Michael also leaves his St. Joseph family, mother-in-law Sue Bayless, Jerry and Charlotte Sollars, Ellen and Bill Schrupp, Greg Baldwin, Frances Lamb and his “brother” and colleague, Dr. Joe Kibirige. There will be less laughter and silliness without him in our world.
No service is planned. The family will have a memorial service in the future.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the animal rescue organization of your choice would please Michael.
