Overland Park, KS -Helen Berniece (Sommers) Karkuth, 98, formerly of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010, at a health care center in Overland Park.
Helen was born in St. Joseph, on October 6, 1911, to John I. and Theresa (Jankowski) Sommers. She attended St. Peter & Paul School and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She volunteered her time as a seamstress. Helen worked for National Biscuit Company and Westab in St. Joseph.
She married Frederick Karkuth, Jr. and they raised their family. Frederick passed away in 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Larry, Victor, John, Frank and Edward Sommers; and one sister, Margaret Beers.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Shirley Haffner, Prairie Village, KS and Barbara Gillip, Overland Park, KS; and one granddaughter, Angela Haffner, Leawood, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial 1:00 p.m. Monday at Horigan Chapel. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph.
