Garland “Gary” C. King, 69, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, June 17, 2010 at his mother’s home.
Gary was born May 26, 1941 in St. Joseph. He received two Masters Degrees from Missouri Western State University and was a member of their alumni club. He generously donated his company’s chauffer services to assist impaired drivers who were students at the university.
Gary served his country as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam conflict. He enjoyed cooking, fishing and being outdoors.
His first career was teaching at Christian Brother High School, followed by supervising social services for Patee Hall. He retired as owner/operator for King Trucking and later operated Gary’s Chauffeur Service.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann King on July 8, 1970.
Survivors include mother, Mary Claar; step-father, Darrell Gitchell; daughters Lynnette Etherton, Tracy (Dave) Lawrence; sons, Phillip, Brian and Todd King, all of St. Joseph, Gary (Melanie) King, Sacramento, California; step-son, Leroy Noble, Kansas City, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Gwendolyn Stocksen, St. Joseph, Sherry Brushwood, Branson, Missouri; one niece and two nephews.
Graveside services, 1:30 pm, Monday Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas. Mr. King has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. There will be no visitation at our Chapel however a register book will be available to sign.
The family suggests memorial contributions to American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
