Buell “George” Westhoff, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 23, 2010 at a local nursing home surrounded by his family.

He was born December 6, 1919, in Kahoka, Missouri, to William and Versa (Forte) Westhoff.

After the death of his mother and due to his father’s illness, Buell was raised in the St. Joseph Boys Orphanage (Tootle Mansion). The orphanage was torn down when Bishop LeBlond High School was built. The Franciscan Sisters ran the orphanage.

Buell married Lillian (Prather) on August 9, 1941.

Buell served his country in the United States Army as a medic. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, bird watching, vegetable gardening and BBQ’s with family. He worked for Swift and Company for 29 ½ years and Continental Can for 10 years.

He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Cathedral.

Preceding him in death were his four brothers, Leo, Harley, Paul and Vick; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia (Cruz) Westhoff.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lillian, of the home, three sons; Stan and Rita Westhoff, Gansevoort, New York, Roger and Patricia (deceased) Westhoff, St. Joseph, Mark and Darlene Westhoff, Wellsville, Kansas; two daughters, Mary Ann and Tony Dudik, St. Joseph, Susan and Thom Cathcart, Waycross, Georgia; eleven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A prayer service and rosary will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery Horigan Chapel on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 10:00 am. Father Bill Walter officiating. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post #359 and the November Team.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Hands of Hope Hospice, or Inter-Serv made in Buell’s memory.

Pallbearers were: Stan Westhoff, Roger Westhoff, Mark Westhoff, Tony Dudik and Thom Cathcart.
